Question 1

Is this a complete game? Are characters included?

Accepted Answer

Premade character sheets are included, a story (that would take about six sessions to run through) and the basic rules are included. You get some dice but no miniatures. You don’t need miniature to play, I often use whiteboards with squares on one side and whiteboard pens for battles and maps. You don’t really need all the fancy stuff to play D&D, but it can be nice.

Question 2

Do the characters backstorys have much to do with the campaigns?

Accepted Answer

The campaign in the starter set has a suggested plot hook. This is the "why" the premade characters are involved in events.

That said, if youre comfortable making your own characters, there is literally no need to use the premades characters. It's simple enough to use to plot hook for anyone.

D&d allows a great deal of freedom of choice. That can begin with the starter set or it can come after. Whatever the players at your table prefer

Question 3

I i already have the essentials kit. is it worth getting this? or better to progress to the books?

Accepted Answer

It really depends on where you're at.

The main advantage of getting this is that it's a simple adventure. If you feel you need more time and space to learn how the game works, Lost Mine of Phandelver (the adventure included in this box set) will.do that for you. The books assume you know more or less what you are doing and so will be lea forgiving. They also assume that you have The Monster Manual (and that is required) as well as The Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Manual (although you can get by without them...if you know what you are doing), but this box set does not. That means that you don't have to invest in those three books to make it work, giving you extra time to decide if you enjoy D&D to spend that money.

On the other hand, I find that the full published adventures are substantially higher in quality and are significantly more enjoyable. If you are ready to commit to D&D and are willing to get the books I've mentioned as we'll as the adventure books, then I wouldn't bother with the Starter Set. It will have little to offer you.

Question 4

Can you play this with more than 6 people?

Accepted Answer

You can but the encounters will last a lot longer and you would need to make more monsters
