Another great gadget from Oxo Good Grips, a kitchen essential!
I love Oxo Good Grips products for their quality and price, so when I wanted a good mandoline slicer, I chose Oxo for that too. I really only wanted a simple gadget mainly to slice potatoes thinly for dauphinoise potatoes, I was not disappointed. The slicer works well, giving uniform slices of potatoes, and now that I have got used to it, I will be using it for a lot more slicing jobs. The thickness of the slice is also very easy to adjust. However, the blade is SHARP (very sharp), so rather that just use the blade guard, I also used a mesh metal glove to ensure my fingertips remained intact. The scaredy cat in me didn't trust myself to wash it without cutting myself either, so into the dishwasher it went, and all was great. I love the mandoline slicer - I will get lots of use out of it, but I would suggest using the metal mesh glove. I know it will last me ages, and have no hesitation in recommending it as an essential kitchen tool.

OXO Good Grips Hand Held Mandoline Slicer
Wow. I decided in my infinite wisdom that I needed a mandoline (after all, who doesn't?!). I actually just bought this for making ratatouille, which was amazing, and nicked my finger of the edge a tiny big (my own fault) - ouch! But was great to use and clean in the dishwaasher. The next day I decided to make a vegetarian lasagna, and therefore wanted to make long strips of courgette. Looking back I should have cut the courgette in half lengthways before subjecting it to my beginner mandoline culinary skills. I didn't, got distracted, didn't use the guard and whilst talking to my son, encountered the blade up and very personal with my thumb. Like love, the sting was sharp and the bleeding profuse - I held it above my my head which ran down my arm and freaked out my 6yr old who decided I needed an ambulance. I didn't, but boy the really thumb bleeds a lot! It looked like I had a crimson viper coiling it's way around and up/down my arm. Nothing seemed to help (and I had no steristrips), so I held it aloft, applied pressure til it was the calmest it could be and smeared it with superglue (my thumb not the mandoline). Eventually it healed/ stopped looking like I'd cut a major artery, and when everything was calm enough I removed the superglue (released the blood blister that had built up, steri-stripped the sides together (thank you husband) and glued the edges. Everything's good! Steri-Strips Skin Closures x 8 Loctite 0000602 Super Glue Tube - 3 g That is until I came to use it again today and found that at 5am my husband in his infinite wisdom, had decided to make toast with the mandoline on top - so it's now melted together. This was perfect for slicing, good guards, easy to use, dishwasher proof but not toaster/ husband proof! Need anoher one, and having looked at the others on the market, I don't see why I would need anything else but this one!

space saver
After watching Jamie Olivers 15 minutes meals with endless delicious looking cabage salads I considered buying a food processor. However I wonder how much i would use such a thing as i prefer doing doughs and bakey stuf with my hand mixer or by hand. Also in my new fabulous kitchen I try not to clutter my worktop with machines and hide as much as i can in drawers. So was not keen to have a huge processor taking up a whole drawer. Anyhow decided to give this mandalin a try and it is great. I am now making salads in almost no time. In fact I argue I'm quicker than Jamie as this thing is washed and hid away in the drawer in seconds. It is so small and the little safety grip stores on the slicer itself. I agree that the slices come out slightly tapered but i dont find that a problem. I can slice potatoes for dauphinoise no prob and today did ultra thin strips of white cabage which was delicious. Somebody pointed out that the safety grip doesnt hold long items like carots and cucumber. Well that is true and anyone with common sense would not try to balance a carrot on little plastic tips. If you stay focused and stop slicing in good time you will keep your fingers. But it is extremely sharp so do be careful if your are prone to cutting yourself. The slicer do store in a locked position where the blade does not cut and the grip will cover the blade as well. A good wee gadget in the kitchen and space saving which i find a must

Have no doubt, this is sharp
Upon arrival I was impressed with the quality of this item. It is relatively compact, well made and do exactly what we need. I proceeded to tell my partner and her teenage son that they have to be very careful as this is sharp, use the guard, teenager not to be unsupervised to begin with etc. etc. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I'm cooking tea, music playing, glass of wine poured, I'm in full flow. Time to start slicing all of the items for the overly elaborate pickled Asian salad which was going with out meal. Revelling at how well the slices were coming out and being proud of my work I instantly came down to earth with a crash. Searing pain through my finger, red on my hand... You see I wasn't using the guard, I know better and (thought) I was being careful. After the blood cleared this device had removed a chunk of my nail and, possibly a section of the nail bed. I summary for the stars: Well made and good design - 5 stars How it feels when you get it wrong - 0 stars Sharpness - 5 stars (it cut through nail with zero resistance). Seeing as the zero is due to my stupidity it has to be five stars, buy but be careful.

Works a treat.
Great kitchen tool, we use it for all slicing, the holder keeps fingers out of the way. Love the way of changing slice thickness it's so easy.

Excellent for the price!
Great little mandolin. I'm not sure why people are so surprised they can cut themselves when they use this - it's literally a tool for slicing vegetables quickly and easily, it should be obvious that if it cuts a vegetable it will cut your hand. That being said, it's a really good slicer for its price. The thickness options are good and easy to change between, the thinnest is thinner than I expected given theres only 3 options, and its ridiculously easy to clean. I have one of the bigger ones with a box underneath that has all the different chopping attachments that I mostly just use as a mandolin and I wanted one to keep in my locker at work to be able to take healthier meals in as I work shifts, and if it wasnt for the fact that I want to still use the other chopping attachments I would bin that one and get another of these, as this is far superior.

Stays sharp. Definitely recommend
This was a very good manoline. It is super sharp annd cuts so beautifully. It never became blunt l. I avoided slicing tomatoes as these are the wordy things to blunt blade. Unfortunately the clear plastic fell off after 11 months. I contacted oxo and they have a lifetime guarantee and are sending me a replacement. I am very happy with the product. I bought an alternative when mine broke for double the optic eod this and it is nowhere near as good. My only gripe is that this product y doesnโt julienne. I used it mainly for onions but occasionally salads and potatos

It works well but it's fiddly to use
I've always had mandolin slicers that come with a box where you change different attachments for different thicknesses or styles of slicing. This is the first time I've had this type where it has an adjustment lever to change the thickness. It's really sharp and I actually really like the finger guard because it's difficult to put it on the wrong way and end up with bits of plastic everywhere, as my husband has done in the past. However, I find changing the thickness to be a little bit fiddly. It doesn't just click nicely and smoothly and I end up messing around with it more than I feel like I should have to to lock the position or to change the thickness. I also prefer mandolin slicers that include at julienne attachment. I bought a peeler and this separately to try but it's just not as easy as having a slicer with multiple attachments. If I had retained the packaging, I probably would return this and opt for a different slicer that includes a julienne attachment as well. If your intention is only to use this as a standard slicer, I think it's pretty good if a little bit fiddly to use. If you want multiple styles of slicing I probably wouldn't bother with this and would just go for a slightly more expensive gadget that does everything with different attachments.

Another great OXO product
This mandolin has made cutting vegetables for my dehydrator such a breeze Pros: -the blade is very sharp and cut through the veggies fast and efficiently - the handle on the part that helps hold your veggies in place is very comfortable on your hands. It has little spikes on it so that your veggie can stay in place as you slice through it - I appreciate the visual illustration to determine the size of a cut you would like for your veggies, as opposed to a numerical value. It is easier to see exactly how thick I would like something instead of guessing what it would look like. - the thickest setting (as shown in the last photo) is just big enough. -the handle locks into place on the mandolin so you do not lose it while it is in storage Happy with this mandolin!

excellent addition to my cooking life
I always hesitated to buy one of these things because I felt it's more hassle (cleaning, storing, making sure you don't cut yourself etc.) than benefits but now that I got one I wish I'd done so sooner! It cuts everything perfectly and in a matter of seconds, it's safe to use, and the food looks much nicer! I'm glad I read some reviews before choosing this brand, as it seems they were right and this object is perfectly reliable. I feel my cooking life would have benefitted (and been more fun!) if I'd added this sooner.
