What can't you use briquettes in egg bbq?

It all comes down to the additives in the fuel(s) you are using. Because the  Egg BBQs are ceramic lined, and have a closed construction with only a chimney when in use, any chemical that is burned will concentrate on the interior surfaces.

So, charcoal briquettes have chemicals that bind the charcoal into the briquette shape. That's also why using lighter fluid or other accelerants to start the coals is not a good idea.  That's also why lumpwood charcoal looks like it does... It's unprocessed charcoal and has no chemical binding agents

Yes of course. There is very little difference between a Green Egg and a Kamado Joe.

I'd have three possible answers, all of which might not apply to you, in which case they'll be fine:
1) Petrochemicals - if you use briquettes with starter in them, you'll permanently coat the inside of your egg with a nasty flavour. If you've got pure briquettes, you'll be ok on that front
2) Temperature - you just can't get them as hot as lump, and you can't burn them for anywhere near as long. So if you're just using them for a short and normal backdoor bbq you'll be ok, but if you've got an egg, you're probably using it for other things too, so you'll have lump for that
3) Ash - the big feature of the egg is air flow, and the compact and plentiful ash that comes from a briquette will choke it to the extent that the airflow control is useless.

I see this is on the fire-starters page, so perhaps you're thinking of forgetting the fire starters and using the instant-light briquettes or those bags you put a match to? I guess you'll be ok using them occasionally, if the lid is open, it's a short bbq and a short burn, but if I were you I wouldn't close the lid while it's getting hot and burning the nasties, and I would clear out the ash, because if you want to use the egg again for a low and slow, but it's full of instant-light stink, well... it's up to you

They are just a nice clean fire lighter, can't see why they won't work with any charcoal (my only experience is with BGE charcoal on a BGE)
