Suspiciously great value
This device was up and ready to roll in minutes. The packing has a curious resemblance to Apple ® Inc's AirPort Express and includes an USB power supply, ethernet cable, quick setup guide and a half sized a CD-ROM resource disc. The last is optional as you can download an extremely detailed PDF from TP-Link's website. The web/router interface is highly navigable and good for those seeking to tweak their configurations. Renaming the SSID and reassigning an encryption password is very easy. And now for the most important bit....Adding a 3G USB modem. In my case it was immediately usable upon first use. My 3G USB modem is about four years old and licensed to very well known UK/European ISP and made by Huawei of China. The web/router interface also enables you to look up ISPs but it should immediately connect. It has several modes of use. 3G USB Modem, WISP and AP (Access Point). It can also be used as a repeater, i.e. it can extend the range of an existing router. It appears to be quite generic in that it works with most platforms. I am currently using Mac OS X, Linux , FreeBSD and MS Windows. The literature does not mention Windows 8, but I cannot see any reason why it would not function under that OS. iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS should all work. After all, it's a wireless router. This product is a bargain and so far I have no complaints. Again, a great product for any seeking to use a 3G USB modem through WiFi for laptops, smartphones, tablets. and even desktops through ethernet. Impressive device. Great service from Amazon.co.uk regarding delivery. Well done.

Compatiblitly, Compatiblitly, Compatiblitly
We live in a remote place with terrible mobile and broadband coverage, also frequent powercuts which leave us with no way of contacting help. I hoped that buying this, I would at least have a connection to the internet via it and our netbook. I had a 3G dongle which was on the approved list for this router but the ISP (3) does not cover our location so I had the dongle unlocked and put in a Giffgaff sim which does cover us, what could go wrong? Well just about everything. Suddenly the dongle is no longer recognised. It appears it is only recognised when a 3 sim is in it which is useless to me. I do have one glimmer of hope, an O2 dongle which I'm told will work and I will see if it does. Featurewise, this tiny box, 3" square has more features than some standalone routers costing 4 times the price. Other than the 3G, which I cannot use yet, it is an amazing piece of technology and the reason I still give it 5 stars. Used as an access point (AP) it is incredibly easy to use, just plug it into your router or network socket, set the switch to AP and you have wireless access with full WPA2 security. It comes with a power supply, mine was a european 2 pin jobbie so requires an adapter but units delivered from the UK will have UK PSU's I'm informed. I really am very inpressed with this little device, there is even an online community devoted to reprogramming it to do all sorts of other things and if my O2 dongle shennanigins don't pan out, I may have a look into doing just that. So, CHECK YOUR DONGLE IS ON THE COMPATIBILTY LIST before buying, not ony the dongle model but the ISP (O2, 3, Voda) must match too and hopefully you will not be dissapointed. Edit: Since writing the above, I've discovered that this router is very sensitive to which power supply you use. I had tried using a 7000ah battery pack used for powering and charging my iPhone which outputs 5v 1A but no way will the router work, neither will the 3G work when plugged into a USB socket but plug in it's own PSU and everything works as promised. Strange. I have a feeling that the addition of the 3G dongle is causing more power to be drawn and some internal protection circuitry or software prevents the router from activating the dongle. So, mystery solved and I'm even happier than I was before :-).

Portable wifi Hotspot
I bought this product because i already had a 3G+ Modem and i did not want to buy a mobile Hotspot because i already had a 3G dongle, Ok first thing to say is, this product, well for me at-least, It auto-detected my modem and network settings, so i just connected my tablet (the network Key is stuck on the box) and i was connected to the internet, almost no setting up was required 2. If you have very bad 3G reception with your dongle this is very good because you can out the box in one location and it broadcast Wifi for some reason the speeds i got increased and it feels like i have normally Home broadband. 3. I discovered if you buy a portable battery charger, Like the ones you use to charge your phone you can connect it to the box and it will work off battery power, so now it's truly anywhere portable It took about one week to come and the delivery estimates were spot on. there is no On of Off switch so to turn it off you have to remove the power. Also for me-- in my experience it does work with many devices connect to it. But when you start downloading data at the same time the speeds slow down, the modem works fine, just internet i think other than that, it is a very good product -- you will see that buying it was worth it. So i believe

love it!
I used to have a 3Mobile router to go with my 3Mobile Huawei E156G USB stick to provide internet connectivity on my boat. Stick was great, but the router was a bit limited. I have installed a remote CCTV camera that I dial into for security when I am not on board the boat, and although it worked with the old router, it had the most basic port forwarding and little else. I have a fair bit of TP link stuff already and love it, so this was perfect, and powerful. what I loved most was that I plugged the USB stick in and it started working without any config...! love the size and flexibility - it has the same software as its much bigger brothers. only issue was that the default IP is 192.168.0.254.... not 192.168.1.254 like the rest of the world might assume.... it took me a while to work out why I couldn't ping it - but you cant blame the kit if the instructions are written on the side of the unit(even if the text is so tiny you will need younger eyes than mine to read it) the PSU that came with the device is 5v, 1 Amp with a USB socket, (its not a TP link one, so might be something added by the UK seller) and the power socket on the router is a mini USB connector. For some inexplicable reason it came with a USB-MiniUSB cable with a USB splitter attached.... that is 2 USB male connectors on one end. no idea why, but no harm done. it also comes with a really nice flat cat5 cable - its only just over a foot long, but its ideal if you wanna keep things tidy. anyway - brilliant piece of kit, so cheap and so powerful.

Poor reception strength when in wireless bridge mode
I purchased this item for a family caravan trip, with the intension of setting up as a Wi-Fi hub in bridge mode when connected to the sites Wi-Fi Paid Service (captive portal). The idea was to pay only once for the access (TP-Link) and share / relay onto multiple devices , rather than having to pay connections for each of our devices. Whilst I did manage to get the device configured up and working as expected it struggled to hold a decent signal strength to the caravan sites Wi-Fi Service. Whereas our mobile phones had no problems at all when connecting directly. It seems there is a design flaw or a low power issue in its reception. This item got returned and I will be on the look out for a better, more powerful version. Very poor in holding a connection. i purchased this item to take to the caravan where

DO NOT BUY UNLESS CERTAIN IT IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR MODEM (or use openwrt)
Don't buy it unless you are SURE it is compatible with your modem. The ZTE one I have is not compatible, so its useless. As an aside, the instructions are wrong. You do not access it at 192.168.0.254, but at 192.168.1.1. How a naive user is supposed to figure this out? It was also surprisingly hit and miss to get a simple WLAN sign-on the first time, though after getting through and getting the connection set up it worked after that. The support chatline was excellent, talked me through a firmware upgrade, but at the end of the day it makes no difference, there are from the list very few modems with which it is compatible. If you get lucky it is probably a very good device. Its light, compact, seems to have a fairly good range. But if it will not drive your modem, its a lightweight paperweight. Maybe alternative firmware is available, or maybe I will get one of the three or four modems it seems to be certified compatible with. Or maybe it will be simpler just to get a more compatible device from another supplier. There is an integrated device of this sort from Solwise, which is about the same price, you just put the sim card in, and it works. It is battery powered however, this one is mains powered so is a lot lighter and can be left powered on. But the advantage of the Solwise one is that it has a built in modem and so there are no compatibility issues. EDIT AFTER A BIT OF RESEARCH. If you find yourself in this situation and are comfortable hacking the device around - it will void warranty of course - there is a build of openwrt which is supposed to be compatible with all modems! Google openwrt + mr3020 and go to the wiki page. I will try it and add to this review if it works. However, its not really on. For the ordinary user to buy a device which is supposed to be high compatibility and then find themselves installing openwrt is going to be absolutely hopeless. EDIT: It works, but be careful Yes, you can flash it with a variant of openwrt, and it works. However, doing this with the vanilla openwrt is problematic to configure the modem. So do not do this. Instead use the Rooter openwrt variant. Be careful to do this over a wired connection to the router as otherwise you can brick it owing to data transmission errors. So I am raising my rating from two to three stars, just because all this is not trivial technically.

A great little router at a great price.
This is a versatile little router from TP-Link - a fast growing company that seems to make useful gadgets that were previously hard to find from other manufacturers. I was looking for a way to share my 4G USB stick connection over WiFi, but I also needed 1 ethernet (LAN) connection too, and this router provided that feature with its built-in ethernet port, when set to 3G/4G router mode. The other modes allow the router to act as a regular WiFi access point, so you could connect it to your ADSL or cable modem and use it to provide WiFi only, drawing its internet connection from the modem, much like an Apple AirPort base station for example. It has DHCP, and the IP address settings can be configured for customised IP address ranges, there are the usual NAT & port forwarding options too. Or it can just be used in bridge mode to get all its IP settings from the ADSL / cable modem. All this can be configured via the web-based control panel. The awesome thing about this is that it powers itself from USB, so it can be taken literally anywhere - use it in your car and you have an instant WiFi network on the move, just plug it into a 12V USB car charger which are widely available and cheap these days. Not the best quality feel in the world but that doesn't bother me, it is built decently enough, and it's an excellent price for what you get in my opinion.

Handy router. Software keeps getting update for newer dongles.
I already have a TPLINK N702 to bring to hotels etc. Ideal as an accesspoint for when you need laptop+mobile+tablet and have only one rj45 ethernet cable, but sometimes your hotel has no ethernet cable....... Enter this + dongle. With an added dongle this one can feed the signal to several devices at the same time. My dongle became supported recently (was in the list of changes). So try to get the most recent firmware. I hope to rarely ever have to need it, but the few times this will save the day will be very handy. Strenghts: 1. Set up as AP by default for acting as an accesspoint whenever there is RJ45 cabling available. 2. Power from most standard power sources. I have used it for a day with a battery/external powerbank. 3. Dongle worked fine for me. Weaknesses: 1. By default the router only has an SSID if it has a connection when on dongle. This makes it hard to analyze what's wrong if the dongle does not connect. When configured with wireless/3G/4G connected on-demand you can log on to the router itself though. 2. More complex to use than the 702 Overall: Ideal if you remember to keep setting the switch correctly.

Klein, leicht, praktisch, einfach
