what is the thickness of the wooden top ? Is the wodden top plywood or MDF ?

It's 18mm plywood, and very stiff.

Need some advice on an excercise Im doing with this, anyone able to help? Cant work out what I am doing wrong.

Hi Chelle, what exercise is it you require assistance with? I mainly use the board to strengthen up my core muscles in the torso area and my knee ligaments and calf muscles, merely by just keeping my balance on it for a 1/2hr session (That's enough!!! for me) to get a good workout of those areas.

Is standing on the board challenging in itself (for strength) or would you have to do exercises?

It's definitely challenging when you first start - I could barely manage a couple of seconds on it - as really have to focus your core, but over time I went from that to now being able to stand on one foot. The further together your feet the harder it is with both and obviously with 1 it's harder again. Squats etc will add challenge but balancing in itself uses your core.

Would this be suitable as a planking board? (i.e. to rest your forearms on it and do a plank)

Not sure but the board has a rough anti slip surface which would require you to protect your skin.
