Ideal reference phones for mixing demos. Not for mastering - great for the price though.
After much research, I came up with these as my main studio reference headphones. Having had to downsize my studio due to an injury, I can no longer use my nearfield monitors as much as before and have to rely on headphones much more than before. If you want a set of headphones that sound awesome to sit and listen to your music collection through, then these may disappoint. But, if you want to be able to hear every nuance of your mix, knowing that, whatever speakers your music is played on, it will sound as it should be, these are exactly what you need. Many headphones are heavy on the bass, a bit "muddy" in the mid range and high on the top end - just like pressing the "loudness" button on your hi-fi. Lovely to listen to but useless for mixing. These faithfully reproduce what you put into them, without colouration or distortion - exactly what you need to produce a professional result. They have non of that lack of distinction in the mid range found in so many others in this price range. There very comfortable for prolonged sessions and EXTREMELY light. If I had a criticism, it would be that, being open backed, ambient noise can filter through somewhat - but it's a small price to pay for all the other benefits. UPDATE. Having now used these for some time, I've hit a snag - and had to upgrade. I stand by most of the above BUT mastering "fuller" orchestral mixes, it gets very "muddy" in the lower ranges. I can only describe it as "anything above the cellos sounds great". Once you bring in the lower ranges, the whole mix goes "muddy" and I have to switch to near field monitors. These are great for a basic engineering mix but, for mastering -they're simply not up to it. I think before damning these, for the price, they're still amazing. Fine for demos - not so much for mastering.

Amazing headphones!
I'm assuming that if you're looking at buying these then you're probably not a fan of Beats-style phones or anything that colours the sound too much. These are incredibly neutral. The songs you play on them sound like the original mixes that the recording engineers probably listened to on these headphones, being as they are a staple of every studio in the world. They're crisp, don't have ridiculous bass levels and the sound is open and airy. They also sit very softly on the head, not being tight or overly restrictive and easy to use for hours on end without any discomfort, even for a glasses wearer like myself. If you want to hear your music the way the producers/bands intended you to hear it then these are a must. Dirt-cheap as well! Replaceable ear pads and a decently thick cable complete the near-perfect package. WARNING: These are semi-open backed headphones, so they're home-only numbers, unless you want everybody around you to hear what you're listening to. They're loud, but not obnoxiously so, to everyone else around you.

Cheap studio cans, fairly neutral though lack bass
These are pretty famous and well known so have been around for years, more than 30 years! I think I spotted a pair in the NWA film circa 1985, though those ones were probably made in Austria unlike these. They do feel a bit cheap but they have a detachable cord, are fairly comfortable too. The sound is mostly flat and while fairly accurate for studio use they have a total lack of bass. There is some bass there down to around perhaps 50Hz but not much below that. So not a fun headphones but if you need something for monitoring or tracking or home studio and can find them for 40 or less they might be worth a listen. Bearing in mind the highly detailed review that is the top review I don't think these are anywhere near as good as the Austrian originals and i would not pay £58 for them. I think I paid £45 around 6 years ago but had just had my Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pros stolen and was desperate for something accurate and cheap. I should have read more reviews. For £40-45 they are ok, but don't pay more than that as there are better options for £58 - 80 like the Sony MDR 7506 which are leagues ahead of these and have good accurate bass reproduction but not boom like bass of those terrible beats cans.

Great sound when you get used to it
When I first got these I was disappointed by the bass response compared to my Sony 1000 XM4s, but after spending some time with them I'm thoroughly impressed. They are very comfortable to wear even with glasses, and the open design means you can hear what is going on around you. This is great for wearing in your home, but I wouldn't try using them in public or on a bus. The sound is very clear and neutral in the mid and high ranges, and with a little boost to the bass (in vlc equaliser etc) they sound great. I have found myself using them over my other headphones for listening to music and watching movies. One point to bear in mind, they did not work will with my iphone using the apple lightening to 3.5mm adapter, they were very quiet that way, but they work perfectly on my Macbook and on a USB sound interface.

Music is now an Experience
I was a little sceptical that I wouldn't be able to tell any difference as I am far from an audiophile. I have what I thought were a half decent pair of Akg on ear mobile headphones (actually nearly the same price as these on a huge reduction several years ago) paired with a mobile Dac. However the difference between the two is like a chasm. I'm sure some of it is to do with them being semi open, but the clarity in the vocals is amazing. I had no idea of what people meant in the reviews about giving everything space and opening up the music, but it really takes the sound out of your head - in some cases like being in the room. Even the radio jingles are exciting! Put something like an a capella or a vocal through it and it becomes amazing. I also am unsure where the criticism about the bass comes from. I like everything from dubstep and trance to jazz and metal and can't complain. If you like your bass high enough to sound like it is being played through a duvet then you won't be happy, but you also can bump them up with an equaliser (boo hiss heratic). They aren't without their faults they do leak a bit of sound, everyone thinks I have the volume up too high, its more like the sound you got from Walkman headphones if you are old enough to remember. I also found i need a big pocket for the cable which is pretty substantial. If you do wear them outside even a slight breeze sounds like a gale. However I would suggest if you are umming and ahhhhhing they will be worth your money and far better than some of the more well marketed brands. There is a reason why they have been around for as long as they have.

My favourite headphones
I've used many headphones in the past, including for mixing and the K240s are definitely my favourite. They have light, responsive low-impedance XXL transducers that deliver accurate, true-to-the-source reproduction of even very quiet signals. With AKG's patented Varimotion diaphragm, XXL transducers produce a flat, neutral frequency response from 15 to 25,000 Hz, revealing every nuance of your music. And because of the semi-open-back design, they provide less bleed and more acoustical isolation than typical high-end reference headphones, making them perfect for everything from tracking in the studio to casual listening to an MP3 player. The included adapter make K240 headphones compatible with standard 1/4" or 1/8" headphone jacks. They are also lightweight with a springy headband that opens or closes wider for large heads and closes in for smaller ones automatically, without adjustment. A fully detachable, replaceable 10-foot cord means that if you've rolled over your headphone cable one too many times, there's no need to buy a whole new pair of K240s -- you can easily swap out the cable for a third of the price, should you ever need to. But as a studio commodity, K240 headphones are priced so everyone in the band can wear them. Where else can less than £100 buy such an essential critical-listening tool?

Value for money. Sound. No hardcore bass.
I'm amazed they don't cost more. Pared with tube headphone amplifier they do magic. Play any type of music and let them play! And joy of joys how they do it! Let's start with high range of voices. Flower duet and woman's soprano / Mezzo soprano shows how great are they. Mid range with one of the best examples Eddie Vedder. Alive / Black from Pearl Jam work amazing. How great is to listen to guitars, drums and his voice. Great, warm, soft. Lower range and bass. Try hardcore trance / prog trance / Goa. My fascination with European rap / hip hop scene and I've choose Bushido to tests. And you know what? Bass doesn't go deep, it doesn't make your ears to drop off your head. It's good to listen to. Doesn't gives headache. I love it. Fitting on your head is dead easy. I've got big head with loads of hairs and they fit easily. If anything I don't like it's the cable. Bit too long if you planing to use with smartphone. But it's ideal for usage with headphone amp like I do.

Bass is unsatisfying; lacks thump
TL;DR: The bass on these headphones lacks fullness and is not fun to listen to. I'm far from a basshead, but I can safely say these cans are anemic in the bass department, and I am returning them for this reason. I ordered these cans along with Beyerdynamic DT 770s (which are closed-back headphones) because both piqued my interest and couldn't decide which one to get. So I decided to test both together, keep one and return the other. My laptop has crappy onboard sound, so I also ordered a FiiO K1 USB DAC, which despite its cheap price point, has excellent sound, virtually indistinguishable from the sound of my iPod (which is known to have a great internal DAC). Disclaimer: Other than that, my experience with premium headphones comes from listening to my trusty Sennheiser HD 598s for many years, which I regrettably don't have with me and cannot be part of this comparison. My testing method involved many several hours' worth of repeating various ~10-second passages over and over, quickly switching between both headphones and listening for the differences, using dozens of songs from many different genres. While both headphone's sound signatures are surprisingly similar to my ears (and both are meant to be analytical headphones for studio use), the k240 is glaringly lacking in bass power by comparison. Even simple kick drums lack almost all thump, blending in with non-percussion instruments. I'm not at all a basshead (I mostly listen to progressive/alternative rock and instrumental/classical music), but between two headphones that otherwise sound quite similar, but one of them lacks something, of course I'm going to pick the one that doesn't lack it. The k240 does have a slightly wider soundstage (turns out the DT 770 has pretty good soundstage despite its closed design!), but it's not enough to compensate the bass anemia. This is not a genre-specific issue: even orchestral music is affected by this problem, for even something as simple as a marching band drum will lack "oomph" on these cans. As the final nail in the coffin, even the earbuds that came with my phone have fuller bass than these cans.

Best headset for the purest of classical music
This is the best headset I have ever had in my life!! After I have used multiple bass heavy over ear heasets throught my life, even though I was always a classical music lover, when I put on these headsets, I felt that I have come back to my roots once again! I have never felt more nostalgic putting on a headset before! To me true music should always have more focus on the mid freqiencies and a more flat soundstage instead of having very high mids and treble. Apart from its crystal clear sound quality because of which there is great instrument seperation for studio and monitoring purposes, I love the headset due to its nostalgic golden looks, and its comfort, due to the semi-open and light weight body and push back leather head band(even though the leather ear pads tend to be a bit warm), with high quality 3m long cables. In short, these headsets are best for true music lovers (mainly classical & good sustain effect when plugged in to digital piano using the 6.3mm jack, especially for the main treble area were more emphasis is needed) but would be unsuitable for bass heavy rap tunes.

Finally found a headphone for silent guitar practice
I have a blackstar tube guitar amp and the AKG K240 pairs perfectly for practice session daily. Best part is that is is semi open back so the sound is crisp and well balanced without any processing most other headphones on the market do. The guitar Mids and high notes sound amazing. I also use the K240 to listen to music with my Ipod. The K240 headphone is super light and Ear buds are so comfortable that you hardly feel it on the head. Another great bonus is the long 3m cable and it easily pops out of the main head unit as due to its xrl connection

Switched from beyerdynamic dt990pro..
I’m using two beyerdynamic hp’s ( dt770/990 pro). The 990 had a faulty driver and imo the replacement cost was too high. So I started to investigate a bit deeper into the available brands and their products. Most written reviews clearly had AKG’s on their ‘best value for money’ lists. So I gave it a try with this model. And happily surprised the audio quality is really good too. The hp’s translate really well and they’re not hyped or boosted in anyway. At least to my ears they aren’t. I’ld give it a go. In this pricerange it’s actually topnotch material. 8/10 ( the build overall is less ‘pro’ but it’s only 75€)..
