I think I would say Showerproof. I have wore it when working in the rain ,however,I would not go scuba diving wearing it.

No, the watch doesn't have any sort of illumination button. It only illuminates if it is held near some light source and then fades away over a short period of time.

Is this too big for an 8 year old boy?

Possibly yes, but mine did not last long! Slight knock and it broke! Look for something more robust, especially for an eight year old.

how do you replace the battery i e. does the back screw off or prise off

No screws. You prise it off , I haven't had to replace the battery yet though
