Has this Steamer a pre set automatic timer so that food can be set to cook whilst we are out?

No, but you can plug it into a timer plug to switch it on at the time you desire. You need to set the cooking temperature at 40C, 60C, 80C or 100C first. The default cooking time for 40C is 12min. and 20min. for the rest when it is switched on. If you wish to decrease or increase the cooking time, you have to adjust it manually.

what kind of material is the black base of this steamer?

Hi, the base is black plastic but it has a stainless steel lining to hold the water so the water boils on the stainless steel part, not the plastic. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know what type of stainless steel is this? Is it 314L or 306?
