Can this be used as a barrier cream on the bum

It can yes,I also used it as a moisturiser on there knees when they started crawling. A thin amount a little goes a long way.

Burt's Bees Baby 100% Natural Multipurpose Ointment is not formulated to be waterproof as it isn’t intended to be used as a baby diaper ointment. For diaper rash, we recommend using Burt’s Bees Diaper Rash Ointment.

The ointment has been quite grainy , why is this ?

It's grainy because of the coconut oil and wax. The slightest bit of friction melts it easily though. I have been using this as an after shower moisturiser for the longest time. Its amazing. Also works nice for makeup remover although Cocnut oil works well too. If you are put off by the texture, pop a bit in your palm and rub with your fingers. It will melt quickly.
