A stylish timepiece at a great price.
My wife bought me this for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't worn a watch in about 3 years since the leather strap on my Lacoste watch broke (the second in as many years) and it was going to cost as much as buying a new watch to replace. I knew what I wanted - a traditional analogue watch with day and date, a blue dial and stainless steel bracelet, and none of that chronograph stuff. I'm not a diver, parachutist or mountain climber so I really can't see the point of wearing them day to day, plus they look gaudy, uncouth and vulgar (in my opinion). So my wife had a look at a few decent brand name watches and then asked me to pick one. When I chose this one, she said it was the exact one she would have picked. It arrived a few days later and the first thing that impressed me was the packaging. The watch was sitting on a little satin cushion with the "Seiko" name in gold. I tried it on and although it needed a couple of links removed (long "u" type bars hold the links in place and are very easily removed), it was perfect. The second hand is the "sweeping" type (it pauses very slightly between seconds) and as it is an automatic watch, there is no winding or battery replacement required. The back of the watch is transparent, so you can see the workings in action, which I think is a bit pointless since it will be on my wrist most of the time. But I suppose its a good way of telling if the watch is working or not. There was a tag on the watch showing the original pricing of $185, whether this is true or not is debatable. All in all, I'm over the moon with this watch. I'm hoping it will last for years and as it is a Seiko, I won't be surprised if it does.

Unbelievable Quality at the Price
I have a modest collection of watches, including 2 other Seiko 5 models, one of which is 14 years old. So, the Seiko 5 is well known to me. These are fantastic watches and unbelievable at this price. Why people buy some 'fashion' watches costing 3 or 4 times the price of a Seiko 5 is beyond me! I guess some individuals follow the herd and are more concerned about brand names.... This particular watch looks very handsome and understated with it's 37mm polished case, especially if you have a slim wrist and modern 40 mm plus cases look too big and ungainly. The dark blue dial is really subtle and almost mesmeric when it catches the light a particular way. A really legible dial, and plenty of quality 'lume' for readability in the dark. Well proven workhorse automatic movement, and a hardlex crystal, which whilst isn't as tough as a sapphire crystal is much more scratch resistant than standard mineral crystal. The style of this Seiko is such that it'll cover any occasion, from being worn with a dinner jacket right through to jeans and polo shirt. What's not to like? Well, not much! If you're not used to automatic mechanical watches, then you need to accept that they'll gain or lose a few seconds, even automatics costing thousands do that... And, whilst the bracelet is fine at this price, it's not fantastic. As some other reviewers have suggested, buy a leather strap, and the watch moves to an entirely different level, even if you only spend as little as £15.00 to £25.00. Personally, I bought a black Hirsch alligator embossed strap, and the watch looks like something that would have cost over £300.00 in a high-street jewelers. You can't really go wrong!

Very Nice watch let down by poor bracelet
Very nice clean, simple smart and attractive design-I purchased the blue dial. Good Lume in the dark but it doesn’t last all night but quite adequate. Neat Compact (smallish) size at 37mm diameter. On the downside the bracelet is poor and lets the watch down. It’s folded links and doesn’t really match the watch. I changed the bracelet to a custom sized solid link beads of rice but bear in mind that the lug width is non standard so not an easy task just swapping it for another strap or bracelet. One shouldn’t have to swap the bracelet in the first place but I couldn’t abide the non solid lug ends and links so Great watch let down by the bracelet. Some other buyers commented the bracelet pulled/caught wrist hair, I think. Moving on it’s a Tried and tested automatic movement, I can’t comment on time keeping yet. Unfortunately it is NOT hand winding and NOT “hacking” I.e. it doesn’t stop when crown pulled out to facilitate accurate time setting. So very good watch but not a good bracelet.

The best all-metal budget watch on the market
Love this watch. Wasnt sure what I wanted to start with, I just wanted an all metal watch. My first purchase was a 48mm case (I won't mention what brand) which looked like a wall clock on my wrist. I have big hands but did not like the way it looked. I then read a lot of reviews of a lot of watches before making this purchase so i will try to summarise this in accordance to what i read. A lot of people review this watch as being too small at 37mm, I think it's the perfect size. Being automatic it does sit proud due to having the inner workings protruding from the base (this actually looks exagerated in the photo), but this took me all of a minute to get over and now I don't notice it at all. Ignoring the strap for now, the watch itself is beautiful. Sitting inside an immaculately polished case you get a pearly grey face which compliments the gold motifs on the hands and hour markers superbly, and in my opinion, is then surprisingly complimented further by the greeny white of the luminous detailing within - which by the way works very well, enabling me to see the time in the middle of the night at a glance. Having the day and date is always a must for me personally and I have not noticed any other language for the day other than English, I like that 'SAT' is blue and 'SUN' is red. I like the Seiko 5 logo. I like the glass back, giving you full view of the automatic workings and I like that the adjuster wheel is nicely set in and at an angle to centre, meaning it doesnt dig into that soft spot on the back of your hand. The metal band has had a lot of bad reviews with almost everyone advising to replace it for a leather strap. Though obviously cheap, I actually find no problems with it at all. I've worn the watch for a week now and do not look at it with any negativity and I find the clasp works very well, I like the Seiko embossing on the clasp. The band was far too big for me when it arrived but I was able to remove links myself easy enough to get the right fit. I bought the watch from Hollins & Hollinshead with next day delivery. Sure enough it arrived the next day, very well packaged, ticking with time and date all set up for me. That was a nice touch when I opened the box. The box by the way is stylish and came with user manual and stamped warranty from H&H.

Not fit for purpose.
Was ok to start with, but soon started losing 1 minute a day, liveable with. However recently started losing between 20 and 30 minutes on the odd occasion and once stopped completely. Unable to find out how to return to Seiko to ask for a refund. The watch itself is less than a year old!

Very impressed with this watch!
I collect watches, including Casio, Citizen, Tag etc, but this is my first Seiko. I wanted to get an automatic watch and I'm really glad I picked the Seiko 5. Opening the box, it just looked like a quality watch. The way the blue face catches the light really sets it off. It's not a large faced watch, but even though I'm 6ft 4 and I have a big wrist, it still manages to look right and stands out. Out of the box it was slightly too small to fit comfortably around my wrist so I got in touch with Seiko about extra links. They were a pleasure to deal with and I had the extra links within about 3 days, even though it was just before Christmas. It's early days, but it seems to keep time well and it's easy to set the time/day/date. I know some of the other reviews mention the bracelet not being solid etc. They are right, it isn't, and I get what they mean (I even bought it thinking it might swap the bracelet for something else) but personally I don't find it an issue. Yes it's light but it's well made, it looks good and it's comfortable so I won't be changing it. All in all this is a lot of watch for the money and I would recommend it to anyone. Its quickly becoming my regular watch and it won't be the last Seiko I end up buying.

Must be seiko
Snxs73s Seiko. These are now becoming discontinued and the new ones are £335 each. These are using the movement 7s26, also discontinued, so it's really good to grab now. New old stock. Works fine. They call this the poor man's datejust (but has day). Really nice. Great lume. I'd get now. They are tough movements and bi-directional winding. They wind full for 42hrs in no time. They don't hack, or wind, but it's less to go wrong, plus they just don't need to. Excellent engineering by Seiko. Can't fault it.

Nice movement in these watches but the strap is very ...
Nice movement in these watches but the strap is very thin and cheap looking. I tried to get a better strap but it seems that it is not possible as Seiko make their watch cases to their own specifications. I have treid to get my other Seiko automatic looked at at lots of high street watch repairers and NONE of them would touch it. Timpsons said that they could repair it but sent it back 10 days later saying (as all the others have said) that the glass is special, they don't have the parts etc. So, as far as this watch is concerned, it's very nice, keeps good time and looks OK apart from the naff strap, which it appears, cannot be replaced by a 'curved ends' type. I have other steel straps, not 'curved ends' and they fit OK but don't look as good. 19mm strap is what you need in case you want to try and upgrade your strap.
