How much background noise do you get from this when it's on? That is, is there any hiss or crackle at all?

I have found no noticeable hiss or crackle which sometimes makes me double check it’s on which it always has been when checked.

Can you get with two recievers? Or can you two at once without interference?

These units come as a pair - one monitor / sender and one receiver. They are uniquely coded to communicate only with each other. There is no facility provided to link in a second receiver. The underlying radio communications system allows multiple communication links in the same area without cross-talk or interference with each other, so a second pair of units could be used.

Does the 400 monitor provide constant sound or intermittent? Thanks

From experience both the 400 and 450 provide continuous HD sound

Is one of the units portable i.e. Not plugged in ?

Yes! The parent unit comes with re-chargeable batteries. Plug in to charge, I use the monitor every evening for around 2 hours as a portable and only have to charge the parent unit every 4-5days! Very good!
