In my case, I had a 1/2"x6" plastic nipple that was installed. The nipple went into the tiled wall about 1-1/2", and the rest protruded from the wall. The originalk tub spout screwed into the nipple. With the Hansgrohe tub spout, you have to install a fitting into the wall. The spout itself will attach to the fitting. The fitting is wider than the 1/2" nipple that was there, so I had to enlarge the hole, which had to be carefully done since it was ceramic tile and mortar. Once it is wide enough, the installation is straightforward. Attach the fitting to the pipe using a short nipple so that the fitting extends enough out of the wall for the flange and spout to attach, and tighten the set screw. The round flange trim is wide enough to cover the enlarged hole. Very. You can get whole tubs for the price of this spout. So you need a worthy tub. You can't put this in just any fiberglass tub/surround. But if you have a worthy tub, in this spout you're getting as elegant and sophisticated a filler spout as exists. It's exceptionally good-looking: elegant, refined, beautiful. Crafted from a solid chunk of steel, this is a heavy spout. The flow is not circular, but ribbon-like. Comes with a circular escutcheon for the wall. Installed the two pieces look like one.
