Either the lines get tangled or the guides on the rod can get damaged. The Midwest sleeves are some of the best I have found. I fish with 6'6" fishing rods, and the length of the sleeve is perfect for protecting the rod and covering any lure that attaches to the rod's hook keeper. I have one on a 7' fishing rod and it does a fine job protecting the rod but it does have a tendency to flex the tip if its under any tension. The Midwest Sleeves have a looser fit then some of the other rod sleeves on the market.
