More than just a narrative on the meanings inside Negro Spirituals, this book succinctly connects the humanness of the slavery experience and commerce, to the elements in African, Caribbean, European and Southern USA society that brought forth the incomparable Negro Spiritual genre. As a DMA and musician deeply interested in Ethnomusicology this book is carefully and thoughtfully researched.  Choral directors along with those interested in what background elements exists in African American culture today should order and read this book.  It comes with a CD of spirituals arranged by one of our lifetime's brightest musical lights, sadly cut short, Moses Hogan.
