In fact, going up and down the basement stairs is a bit of a challenge because the plush really does stick out around the foot, and our steps aren't quite code (older house) so the plush behind the heel is something to be aware of. In fact, there's not really a right or left to them, though the more I wear them the more bias there is, but it's not based on the shape of the sole, simply the padding adjusting to my feet. Even so, they're surprisingly comfortable and stable to walk around in, even with my admittedly choosy feet. The soles are solid and grip our slick floors securely and they feel as if they're not going to warp and throw my foot off-balance any time in the near future, which is pretty good for $20 slippers...and better than the $70 sherling slippers these are replacing.
