For the pool it’s fine without the base layer as long as you don’t mind going commando. Haven’t used for fishing yet but looking forward to wearing in the kayak and using the pliers pocket while standing up. Love all the pockets. What a catch... A kilt fits perfectly; so do these board shorts. E commerce for cloths presents a risk-benefit challenge; I'm so happy with the way these fit. They are at the knee, and spot on at a 34" waist. The color (grey) is rich and saturated. The design is stylish and fun. The material feels great and I imagine would dry quickly. I have not worn them in the water yet...but it's 'gonna happen. Theses are already easily one of my favorite all-time board shorts. Proud to wear 'em, worth the $$$! TBD: No zipper, instead there's Velcro.
