If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the action is non-stop and you are in for a page-turner. I felt that "Into the Guns" was a superb piece reflecting the very real discontents in our society that still exist today. Yes, there is a Civil War between the South and the North... yes, the book implies more support for the Union than it does the "New Confederacy". I can see why some reviewers felt differing opinions than I did. However, I live in the South and was immensely thankful for the detail that Mr. Dietz incorporated into the book. Almost every town in the South that Mr. Dietz references, I have visited. A couple I have actually lived in. So of course it was exciting to take a rarely offered, fictitious journey through my own backyard.I felt that the characters have been developed very well and I certainly felt a connection with the major characters. You won't find too much time spent on the extraneous details that some people enjoy. This book, while not skimping on character development, is truly more about the plot than anything else. Again, the characters are well done and I enjoy riding along with them, but being that this book is clearly a page-turner (and that's good for the style and intent of this book), you will often be kept up wanting to read just one more page, then another "last page", then another "last page" you promise yourself.As I mentioned previously, the plot is truly what you'll be immersed in with this book. It is fast-paced but Mr. Dietz delivers the detail necessary to round out the world. There's clear points of suspense and innumerable waves of action. I am glad the author is planning on making sequels to this book as part of "America Rising". There is much more to tell and if there is one thing I wanted, it was a good ending. You don't quite get that with this book. There's so much more left to do. It's more apt to call the ending a "break" than anything else. Nonetheless, I was satisfied.A quick side note: Mr. Dietz's mastery of military fiction (or military sci-fi for that matter) is second to none. He knows his stuff and it's clear through his storytelling. You almost feel drafted into the military yourself through reading this book. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but you do learn a good bit about military colloquialisms, rankings, armor and weaponry, et cetera.In conclusion, I would highly recommend adding this to any military fiction/science fiction -lover's bookshelf. If you are looking for a page-turner that opens itself up into a trilogy, then check this out. If you want aliens, then go elsewhere. Character development was slow but rewarding. Plot predictable but big challenge to mix a minor ELE with love, war and politics. Enjoyed it overall and look forward to the next chapter. Dietz. I read a lot of military sci-fi and end of the world stuff (zombies, EMP, plague, etc.), and quite frankly I had grown tired of it all. However, Dietz takes it to the next level. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The action starts on page one and moves along at a steady pace. There are no wasted scenes or dialogue. The characters are well developed too. Dietz puts you into their heads so you can see why they make the decisions they do. This story is really about soldiers who find themselves in extreme situations they are not trained or prepared for, and where no clear right or wrong answers exist. In short, "Into the Guns" delivers!
