Does anyone know if this gum has a better taste yet?

Well the peppermint is the better tasting one.

How long does one piece keep you energized?

Not very long. I use Military Energy Gum. It's about 100 mg caffeine per chiclet sized piece. More than two-a-day keeps me up at night. The package says, do not exceed 2 pieces in three hours or more than 10 pieces in 24 hours. It hits the blood stream pretty fast, and fatigue isn't an issue for two or three hours. I hope thisinformation helps. I didn't like the Jolt gum.

What is the shelf life?

If you slide the foil pack out of the sleeve, the best by date is stamped on the back of the foil.
