these stones are good as a starter set for someone who has nothing ...
these stones are good as a starter set for someone who has nothing but I would probably stop myself from buying these if I could go back in time. no matter what steel hardness your knife is, the stones will wear uneven pretty fast. if you do not also purchase another stone for flattening then you will have a pretty bad time guaranteed. these stones are workable on most knives as long as the stones get a regular flattening. the harder steels will require more time and patience. you could also say that about the cheaper steels. the cheap steels require many more grit sizes in between to keep the chipping down and the stone cutting speed from being too much. with a very low end steel on this combination stone you will spend a lot of time on the 1000 cleaning up the damage done on the 400. on a very hard steel you will spend a lot of time because the stone is not cutting a lot of material. in fact you will notice the knife cutting the stone. I keep my stone submerged in water so if this is the reason it is falling apart then it is all my fault. my main problem with using this stone as a complete system is that the 1000 does not finish the stone as nice as a Japanese 1000 and I would also say that the grit size at 1000 on the POMEX stone is very inconsistent. you can polish and cut at the same time but you can still chip it just as well with some lower grit particles getting in. this is also one of the drawbacks of combinations stones is that they tend to cross contaminate the finish side with the lower grit from the maintenance side even if you try to wash them.

works good
I got this and the 1000/6000 grit one to get kinda' a 1 to 8k grit progression. Prob'ly only Sharpened like 3 or 4 knives on them so far but worked good. Big enough to use on kitchen knives. I wasn't able to shave with them afterwards but I think you need a finer grit for that anyway, or maybe better technique than I have lol. Easily did the paper test though, an cut tomatoes really nicely too. My one concern is the stones seem a little soft, like a lot comes off when you use it and I wonder if they'll wear down fast. Noticed it the most on the 3000 grit brown side.

Works great
This came quickly and well packaged. I spent a few Sunday afternoons watching football and sharpening all of our kitchen knives. I am not an expert, but they were considerably sharper when done. I do need to order a stone to flatten it out with though since my technique creates a low spot in the middle. But that's not the stones fault.

Cuts well but looses slot of material
Releases a lot of materialDon’t expect the 400 side to last very long if you are doing a lot of reprofiling andGreat stone to learn how to sharpen cheap bladesBest if you are under running water

Everything I Hoped For
My stone arrived in good shape and it works better than I expected. This is my second "budget" waterstone (I lost my last one moving to a new house) and I am much happier with this one. The size of the stone is great and it gives a good edge.

High quality. I recommend this 3000/8000 combination stone.
I like the size about 8". The dual grit. This is a very nice stone.

Cuts
This is what you use to make the sharp things cuttier.

Great stone for a home owner with a small shop.
I ran this water stone thru its paces for sure in 3 days. I used the 1000 grit side sharpened and reshaped some poorly sharpened and very neglected antique plane irons and a mix of high grade chisels, 8 tools total. The stone held up far better than my elbows.
