Enjoyable Christmas mystery about a grandmother and her grandchildren plus missing geese
I read this when it was first released. I am going to have to read it again. I do remember that I loved it, the whole thing, so it gets 5 shiny Christmas stars from me. Last O. is a kind, wise, loving grandmother. She is a wonderful character. The kids are cute. They help hunt for thie missing geese for everyone's Christmas feast in Lady O's viilage. (Goose was the traditional bird served at Christmas in England). Very enjoyable with a happy ending. A well written Christmas story.I have been reading romance novels since 1972. I was 18 when I started with Georgette Heyer. After finishing college and becoming employed full time, I was able to afford to buy new releases of regency romance novels. I visited several bookstores weekly to pick up the regency novel series books published monthly by Signet, Zebra, and the other publishers (Avon, Coventry, etc) who had regular new regency novels. Many of the older regency romance authors got their starts with these publishers so I became acquainted with all the authors publishing during the late 1970s to the end of the 20th century. Unfortunately, the end of the 20th marked a major change to bookstores and publishing. My bookstores started closing (and I live in a sizable city in a crowded county so I can just imagine how people who loved to read as a hobby were affected, probably worse than I was). Stephanie Laurens was one of the many authors I became acquainted with and became a fan of through those now defunct monthly regency romance book series. She writes well and does not write down to her readers She writes assuming her readers are intelligent which is why I like her so.By the dates mentioned in this review, you should able to calculate my approximate age and realize I am now a senior citizen. I still enjoy all the old authors who began their careers when was a young woman. I honestly believe that reading well written regency romance novels taught me, a shy young women, how to wisely pick a good man to be my husband and many things that a sheltered young would have trouble learning save for these wonderful novels. I find them romantically enjoyable but also educational.

Cute Christmas Novella
My rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars. This novella was a fun, quick read, with likable characters. It was, for the most part, very light-hearted, and contained a cute mystery and matchmaking. The only real problem I found was that the plot developed a bit slowly -- I think mostly because it was so light-hearted and contained so many characters.I have always enjoyed Lady Osbaldestone in all Laurens' books. She is an interesting, and quite entertaining character. So I thought it would be fun to read a Christmas story with her and her grandchildren as the main characters.I still like Lady Osbaldestone, and her grandchildren were adorable little imps. It was fun how she worked to find something to keep them busy, so that they wouldn't keep getting into trouble. I loved how she also encouraged her grandchildren to help with her matchmaking attempts, and they took to it immediately. It was cute how they thought of ways to encourage the couple, sometimes all on their own. I especially liked that Jamie was so good at figuring out ways to "convince" people to do what he wanted -- he was quite the little manipulator, and it made for fun reading.I really liked that Lady Osbaldestone, her grandchildren, and all the townspeople worked to help Lord Longfellow realize his scars didn't make him a lesser man.My rating system is below.1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Grab this book and enter a wonderful world full of laughter and love, with sprinkles of love and romance! WONDERFUL!!!
What a perfectly wonderful world to live in. The town this is located in, has people who know the true meaning (not the glitz & glitter) of "The Season" of Christmas! They are full of love and compassion for each other. What fun that this grandmother coming back to her and her deceased husband's original home in a small town and has her three grandchildren to watch for the season. The grandchildren range from 5 to about 12 and are just wonderfully REAL! They are full of joy and wonder of the season but yet real so they have some adventures. That alone made this story special and the there is THE GEESE!!!The village's supply of geese (for their must have roast goose for Christmas) have gone missing and the grandchildren and very smart, loving and caring grandma give chase and try to solve the mystery of the geese! WHAT FUN!Then there is the returned soldier from the Peninsular Wars scarred not only of face but of spirit and the young lady in the estate nearby who is shouldering all the cares and hard work of managing all the assets for her brother who is a nice young man but not ready (he thinks) for responsibilities. This whole cast lights up your world the whole time you're reading this joyous book about a wonderful place full of wonderful characters.Just to give you a hint--it opens with the children tying the church bells together to see how they sound all at once! THE SOUND is horrendous and the whole town hears it! BUT they were just doing an experiment and were quite sorry.

Fantastic Christmas story
This story is delightful - the characters are well-developed and charming, just loved the children's passion in discovering the mystery of what happened to the geese and they were beneficial in matchmaking, also - Mrs Obaldestone reminded me so much of kindly grandmother taking charge of not only the children but the village people, too - the plot was believable and fun - the romance was sweet - that a scarred soldier and under appreaciated miss could find happiness was so beautiful - this will be a must read for me at Christmas time

With an injured veteran of Talavara, tearaway university friends of a local landowner, plus a couple of village traditions in the lead up to Christmas. Delightful!
I don't think that Stephanie Laurens is capable of writing a bad book. This is another good one. A lighthearted romance with a younger Lady Osbaldestone and three mischievous but lovable grandchildren. A wounded soldier, home from fighting in the Peninsular, convinced that he is sentenced to a life alone. A young woman who is convinced that at 24 she is an old maid. Lady Osbaldestone and her merry band are determined to play matchmaker! Then, of course, there are the missing geese! If they aren't found the whole village will be without their Christmas goose for dinner! This delightful novel is suitable for all ages.

I loved this book
I loved this book. It was an easy read but with the adventure of the children with their grandmother trying to find the lost Christmas geese along with the story line of a gentleman coming back from war broken but with the grandmother's help soon on the mend it was never boring. I loved the respect the young men showed the grandmother.Truly reminded me of better times and a wonderful book to read at Christmas.
