Now Available on Blu-Ray Disc. In the small town of Santa Loraina, California, the decrepit, long-abandoned Fowler Funeral Home has become a local legend. As the story has it, Zeb Fowler bought the land to start up a ranching business, but something killed off all the cattle. To make ends meet, Zeb became the town mortician, and the Fowler house was turned into a funeral home--complete with a cemetery for a yard. But the strangest part of the story is the Fowler's son Bobby, whose face was so hideously disfigured it was hidden beneath a burial shroud. At age eight, Bobby mysteriously vanished, and ten years later his parents were found murdered--their faces smashed in. Locals believe that Bobby is still alive. Today, the Fowler Funeral Home is the stuff nightmares are made of--backed-up sewage pooling in the yard, a house of filth, decay, coffins, embalming equipment, and a strange black fungus growing on everything--and now the Doyle family is moving in. Having recently lost her husband, Leslie Doyle is relocating her two children, Jonathan and Jamie, to Santa Loraina so she can become the town's new mortician. But the Doyles have no idea of the horror that they're in for. Soon they'll uncover what happened to the Fowlers--what evil inhabits the grounds of their estate and what happens to anyone who steps foot there...

Mortuary
Tobe Hooper's films are usually divided into two classes the good and the bad: The Good films are: the stylish and intense terror shocker 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre', the suspenseful 'Salem's Lot', the bizarre, sleazy 'Eaten Alive' (which may not be 'good' but certainly an interesting one), the stylish visual chiller 'The Funhouse' (one of his best)the slick, rollarcoaster thriller 'Poltergeist', the incredibly funny and bizarre 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2' and recently the stylish 'Toolbox Murders'. The Bad ones include: the mind-numbing, dull, 'Night Terrors' (his worst film) the silly, ridiculous, poorly written 'The Mangler', the awful 'Spontaneous Combustion' and the corny, less effective 'Crocodile'. Somewhere in between these is: 'Invaders From Mars',a nicely shot but pointless film, and the silly 'Lifeforce'. His best TV work include: 'Tales From the Crypt': Dead Wait, 'Dark Skies', 'Nowhere Man' and 'Taken'. His worst are Freddys Nightmares (the pliot, No more Mr. Nice Guy), Amazing Stories (Miss Stardust) and Masters of Horror (Dance of the Dead). Mortuary is actually a pretty good movie. It CGI effects are not that great but not bad either (their decent considering the budget) the makeup effects are excellent, the writing is ok. What makes it so good is its pacing. Its paced like a rollarcoaster ride and reminds you alot of 'Poltergeist' cross with elements from 'The Blob', 'Night of the Living Dead' and even a dash of his latest, 'Toolbox Murders'. Tobe Hooper is a very intelligent director and knows how to make good movies. His weak reputation (post Poltergeist) comes from a silly story that Steven Speilberg directed Poltergeist, (which both Hooper and Speilberg have rejected and which Spielberg was the 2nd unit director on it, just like he was on the horrible 1999 remake of 'The Haunting'). It also comes from his much troubled productions with Cannon Films (now non-existent) 'Lifeforce', 'Invaders From Mars' and 'TCM 2'. During much of the 90's Hooper had more success with television work then any of his feature films ('Spontaneous Combustion', 'Night Terrors', 'The Mangler' and 'Crocodile'). Both who condemn this are usually those who are excited only by big budget crap.

It is directed by Tobe Hooper. It is a movie. Time passes while it is on...
The non-stop cackling of the utter imbecile that is selling the wretched dump posing as a house, to Tasha Yar, almost made me turn off the movie in the first 5 minutes. It is directed by Tobe Hooper so I gave it a chance. There may be fans of Mr. Hooper who will watch this and enjoy it. I found it at least passed the time for me. You will know in the first 15 minutes if you can stand watching it.

Kinda drunk Kinda funny graveyard babies
It was too funny to be a horror movie. It was too scary to be a horror movie. I took points off for killing my token. These CGI's were hilarious and what helped me survive was "graveyard babies." Watch only when wasted or playing a drinking game. I promise you'll have fun. Its better drunk then sober.

Not bad kind of tame like a kids scary movie.
Not bad but feels like a kids movie and the ending leaves alot out like they wanted to do a part 2 or just ran out of money and said screw it. Acting isn't horrible well the little kid is but the rest are ok until the ending atleast then only the son really has skill.

meh
It's more of a comedy horror. I was open minded coming into the storyline, but even then, the ending still sucked.

Worked well with what it had
Only certain types of people will enjoy this. This isn't for die hard zombie fans, horror fans, or those expecting a multimillion budget. It's low budget and knows it. And works well with what it had. Don't expect Oscar worthy performances here, just enjoy the movie. The only thing that got on my nerves was that Elliott guy. If I had to listen to him laugh one more time....

Bursting with life
This is quite a good little horror with a zombie theme, with a twist. The zombies share there power with a strange black weed.Denise Crosby plays the mom of two who moves to a new town to take up residence in a morgue set in the middle of a graveyard. Her son discovers a local curse, about a man named Bobby Fowler who killed a number of people before. And what would you know but Denise, in trying out a set of house keys accidentally leaves his tomb unlocked so he can wreak havoc once more!
