You have to use your pan and pan the magnetite out or there several types of machines that separate the concentrate.

Is the body and base made from plastic?

Pickup base is stainless, actuating rod is stainless. Everything else is plastic. (handle, body)

Would this work for finding lost sewing needles in carpet?

If you cannot clearly see the needle, the magnet is probably not strong enough. (For instance, it won't pull a needle out if it's hidden in a shag carpet). Mine will pick up a small sewing needle from a smooth table top. If you can see the needle, it probably should be able to pick it up. Realize the base is only roughly two inches in diameter; you need to be right over the needle.

Has anyone actually picked up 8 pounds with this magnetic tool?

No. It picks up a handful of nails perfectly! so tired of reaching into the nail box and getting jabbed under the fingernail.
