Excellent High Capacity Hard Drive
The SanDisk Professional 8TB hard drive is very well made. Solid construction. Very elegant on the desktop. Drives are also stackable. It plugs into the Thunderbolt connection (cable supplied) of my Apple Mac Studio and was up and running within a few minutes. Drive is pre-formatted. The drive is powered by an external power plug (also supplied). When applying power to my Mac and SanDisk the drive does not spin up but waits for the Mac to power up. Both take about the same time to initialise and be ready for use. Perfect for storing my large photo library for use with Adobe Lightroom. The drive isn’t silent as it’s a mechanical hard drive but it isn’t irritating to use. It sits under my monitor next to the Mac Studio. There is enough audible feedback to show the drive is reading/writing. It is a quiet drive compared to others I have used, and it’s certainly a lot quieter than my NAS drive. Drive temperature is slightly warm when it’s been used for a few hours. Perfectly acceptable. Windows or Apple Mac Operating Systems power down the drive by default to save energy. This can be disabled in the OS settings. It’s easy to find the step by step instructions on the SanDisk support web page.

They fail often
I have had 5 of these drives and so far three of them have just stopped working. The old g-drives by gtech were brilliant, since SanDisk took over the company and rebranded these drives, they must be the worst hard drive on the market in my opinion. At first, you will think these are great, nice write and read speeds for a spinning single hard drive, and everything looks great. However, the problems with these are numerous, first up the drives are constantly disconnecting from your computer, I have used them on several macs and they have performed the same on each. Next up the drive will never eject gracefully, you have to shut the computer down so you can safely remove the drive, do not force eject them as you will end up with issues. Then suddenly out of nowhere, the drive will just fail to mount and no matter what you try, they will not mount at all. The only option then is to see if software can mount it, now using diskdrill i managed to gain access to one drive and successfully restored the contents onto a Lacie drive (this is who i switched to). On another occasion, i had the drive just not mount at all, and the software will not pick it up, the drive was just over a year old. SanDisk support is terrible, and the only option you have is to send them the drive back while losing your data. If the drive is out of warranty then you can dismantle the drive to get access to the hard drive, and use a drive bay to access the contents, as the failure with these hard drives is always the mechanics and not the actual hard drive inside. It was such a shame as i had high hope for these drives. So please make sure you do your research before committing to purchasing these drives, as belive me you will regret it later.

Exactly what I needed
Great hard drive for what I needed. I'm a wedding filmmaker and photographer and this hard drive is fast enough for me to work straight off of. I don't really understand the noise complaints. It makes a bit of noise but nothing major. I think we've gotten so focussed on everything being silent. I certainly wouldn't say it's a distraction at all. Just a normal hard drive noise.

The enclosure is stackable, durable, and stylish, and it pairs well with high-end computers. It also has adjustable brightness LED lights that indicate the power and activity status of the drive. Cons -The SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE is not the cheapest desktop hard drive on the market, especially when compared to other hard drives that offer similar or slightly lower performance and capacity for a lower price. However, you might also compromise on quality and durability if you opt for cheaper hard drives from less reputable brands. -It is not the most portable desktop hard drive on the market, either. It has a large size and weight, and it requires an external power adapter to operate. If you are looking for a desktop hard drive that is easy to carry around or use without a power outlet, you might want to consider other hard drives that are more compact or use USB power. Reasons to Buy *If you need a large and dependable desktop hard drive to store your data. You will get enough speed and capacity for your data storage needs without sacrificing quality or durability. *If you are a professional or enthusiast who works with high-value content such as HD photos, videos, music, games, or other files. You will enjoy a fast, durable, and spacious data storage solution that can handle your demanding workloads and protect your valuable content. Reasons to Avoid *You should avoid it if you need a cheap or portable desktop hard drive to store your data. You might be disappointed by its price tag or its size and weight compared to other desktop hard drives that have more affordable or convenient features. *You should avoid it if you are a casual user who does not need a lot of data storage space or performance. You might find this desktop hard drive to be overkill or unnecessary for your data storage needs. Conclusion The SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE 6TB is a high-capacity and reliable desktop hard drive that provides fast, durable, and spacious data storage for professionals and enthusiasts who work with high-value content. It is suitable for users who want a premium industrial enclosure that can store plenty of HD photos, videos, music, games, and other files without compromising on quality or durability. However, it is not the best choice for users who need a cheap or portable desktop hard drive that can store less data or use less power.

This HDD is not fit for purpose
This HDD is Rubbish! I used as Time Machine for new Mac Studio and it failed within 8 weeks. For some unexplained reason it throws up an error message which says "A problem has been detected with the disk that prevents it from being unlocked" backup data lost! Then it took three months for a refurbished replacement to be sent out to me, which has now failed again after just a few months. So in 9 months, I have had two units, one new and one refurbished, and now left without a back up solution for my Mac Studio. Frustrated and angry! Even Amazon has now noted on the item page that tis HDD has been "frequently returned" - why are Amazon selling such rubbish!

G Drive 12TB - Fast big storage
I’ve been looking for a large capacity external drive and the new G drive ticks the boxes. It’s mains powered and quicker read/write speeds make it more appealing than the cheaper WD my book etc. So far this drive has been great (initial back ups in first week). It’s quiet and took about 8 minutes to copy 80gb. It’s far quicker than other external drives I’ve had before but obviously not as quick as an SSD. Time will tell how it holds up

Mine ran WAY too hot - confirmed by SanDisk at WD. Excellent tech support (hence 2*)
This thing idles at a minimum of 53°C, usually 57°C - in a cool flat! Even if you never used it and just switched on your computer, this will slowly crawl up to idle temperatures that are above load operating temperatures. It never sleeps, but does have a power switch. SanDisk told me it should idle at 35°C and that these temperatures are not normal. On load, it runs up to 67°C. This was just on a few hundred GBs as a test. I didn't run the 3TB transfer from an older Hitachi drive that is on its way out. This unit had the 'same', just a newer-gen, Hitachi drive in it. The old 3TB drive stays under 50°C even during long hours of read/write work; so, as it should. SanDisk assured me that it was 'this' one, and that these temperatures aren't normal for this device. But there was no bearing rumble or any noise or vibration that would suggest unusual friction. In fact, it was an extremely quiet drive. I ran the zero-ing out overnight in my one room apartment and slept very well. Speeds were good to better than advertised, with 260MB/s as standard and periods of 270GB/s on a USB-C connection. Tested fine in Western Digital's Dashboard, CrystalDiskMark & Info, as well as HD-Tune. Past all S.M.A.R.T. and surface/sector error tests, as well as a deep-dive with ChkDsk. Not so great on 4KB random access, particularly read, but - most importantly for a backup drive - had generally better write speeds (across the board) than read speeds; and by quite a margin at that. Shame about the waffle-maker effect. It didn't even feel that hot on the outside of the casing; so maybe it was just self-reported cobblers. But I'm not gonna chance it and have my old 3TB drive that's had some cluster errors outlast an overpriced new box. I didn't follow the advice to have it exchanged and shall look for other solutions, maybe a 4TB 3rd-gen SSD (as 4th gen again get too hot). Sadly went back. Second star for excellent, fast, and very friendly support from SanDisk (and then again Western Digital the next day). Dunno what all the nagging is about; most companies won't even let you call them anymore.

Good solid backup drive
These are good solid backup drives for my MacBook. You just connect and run the setup preferences in macOS and then Time Machine just gets on with it. There is some noise when they are working, so if you need a silent drive you should probably look elsewhere. The speed is good and my Time Machine backups are completed in a few minutes every hour.

Horrible quality
Stay away from these disks. I have been a happy G-Tech user for many years but since they are under Western Digital wings and use SanDisk drives, it is pure crap. My ancient 4 TB drives are still working, whilst my both of my two new 12 TB drives give me trouble every few months. This time both at the same time so I have had to have BackBlaze send me a recovery drive. Never, never again.

Enough storage to back up my life, my work, and probably my dogs too.
I bought this SanDisk Professional G-Drive 22TB to finally stop living in the “which SSD did I put that on?” era. Between photo shoots, video projects, and countless backups, my desktop was starting to look like a data refugee camp. This drive is built like a tank. It feels solid, runs quietly, and transfers files fast enough to make my old external drives look like they’re powered by hamsters. I regularly move 100GB+ project folders, and it chews through them without complaint or overheating. Setup was plug-and-play on both Mac and Windows. I formatted it once for exFAT so I can bounce files between systems without issues, and it’s been flawless since. The fan kicks in occasionally but stays whisper-quiet, which is good because I already have two dogs doing enough background noise. At 22TB, it’s the digital equivalent of a walk-in closet. Sure, it’s pricey, but if your work or memories matter, it’s the kind of investment you thank yourself for later.
