Philips Norelco 5400 Electric Shaver, Storm Blue

Five stars so far. It took my Sunday evening shave down from 10 minutes and a bunch of cleanup using a blade, down to 2 minutes and minimal cleanup. This shaver did as good a job as a blade as far as closeness of the shave, with a lot less time and trouble.

I originally purchased this electric razor to touch up my face in-between shaving with a razor blade and shaving cream because I figured that it wouldn't cut as close as a razor. I've been convinced otherwise. When I first switched this razor on, the quietness of it made me immediately think it would be a subpar shave...I couldn't have been more wrong. I hadn't shaved for days, so my stubble was pretty coarse and I worried that this razor would pull my whiskers for a painful shave. Nope, not at all. The heads glided across my face with ease, so much so that I thought I had not taken off some clear barely visible plastic on the heads. When I touched my face where I had just shaved, I literally said WOW out loud! PROS: - Shaves as close as a blade and leaves no razor burn - Does not pull or snag days old growth - Fast & efficient - saves a ton of time over shaving with a blade and cream - hipsters with shaving cream brushes need not purchase. CONS: - Hard to shave closely right under your nostrils like you can with the back of a Gillette blade cartridge- have to use the flip up trimmer, but it's still not close as a blade there Sometimes I hit the power button while shaving and it turns the razor off - not sure if engineers can find a way of placing the power button down lower towards the power plug input, but it could be just me who hits it unintentionally. - I haven't had the razor long enough to comment on durability, but initial quality is exceptional. Well done Phillips Norelco, well done. If you're questioning yourself whether it's worth the money, IT IS!

UPDATE #2: I am generally happy with this product. However, for those who consider to buy it, please keep in mind that you need to remove the blades, and clean them thoroughly after each use. It takes around 4-5 minutes, but if you don't clean, the efficiency of the shaving drops significantly! I wish it had a better or faster way to clean those blades, but it is what it is. Because of this issue, I am dropping it to 4 stars. UPDATE: After using the product for a couple of months, I can confidently say that this is a great product. The battery lasts forever considering my usage. I believe, I only charged it twice so far but I had many shaves. Please keep in mind that if you don't clean the blades, it'll lose effectiveness! Since it's washable, I suggest at least once a week, wash the blades and let it dry. I still like the dry shaving more and my skin got used to the machine, but you have the option of wet shave. I will update again if I see something really bad. I was not expecting such a great quality, to be honest. I've been using palm shavers for my head, and I shave like 2-3 times a week. Every time I used my shaver, which is an affordable brand that I got from Amazon, I had skin burn. It doesn't bother too much but after shaving with Philips, I was so mad at myself for not buying it earlier. The design is very modern and useful. I liked the material. I have not tested the longevity of the battery but from other reviews, I got the feeling that it lasts long enough. I had a dry shave and it was veeery smooth. Cleaning the blades was pretty easy. One of the cons I noticed was that it left hair under my chin and I had to go over and over. It caused a little skin irritation. That might be because I didn't shave with the right angle but I'll keep an eye on it. Another thing is I strongly suggest you shave for the first time when you'll stay inside. It's because your skin will need to adjust to the new shaver so it may get more red than usual. I'm very happy with this purchase and shaved my head very easily. I almost look like a sphynx cat or a lantern visible during the day lol. I strongly recommend this product to everyone.

I bought this to replace a 15+ year-old Philips Norelco 3-head shaver that had a dying rechargeable battery (not readily replaceable due to being soldered into its connections). I was also wanting to get a little closer shave than the old shaver was delivering, which was probably due to needing new blades in the heads. This shaver delivers a much-smoother shave, and much smoother skin (i.e., much closer shave). The size is somewhat larger than my old shaver, and I wish that it came with a protective pouch like the old one, but it handles very well, has great shaving results, and even the trimmer part cuts better and closer than the old model. This one also does not have a separate wall adapter, but instead comes with a USB (A type) cable for charging. If you have a built-in outlet with USB charging ports, you can just plug it in there. Otherwise, you need to provide a USB charging adapter, such as one from an old phone (like I am using) or sold for such purposes. Charging could also be done from a USB port in a car, airport, plane, etc., if you need to charge it while traveling. The shaving end has larger shave heads than my old one, and is said to be waterproof, so it could be used by those who shave larger surfaces, like heads or torsos or legs. Compared to the old model, the shaver is also much easier to clean, as the flip-open top has only a shallow, mostly-flat recess where the accumulated cut off hairs reside until removal. The lack of deep, hard-to-reach spaces means that it will not perpetually have fine hair bits down in deep holes, shaft holes, or corners in the head-support volume.

This is an excellent Machine! Deserving a nice review. I used the 3900 for years, until it died recently. The 3900 is more gentle, however, this one does A GREAT JOB in shaving, very close to a safety razor smoothness and I don’t need to finish with a safety razor, any longer.

I purchased the SAME item a few YEARS AGO, but I dropped it one too many times. I broke it. I WAS SO HAPPY TO FIND ANOTHER ONE! READ ON TO SEE WHY I THINK THIS ELECTRIC RAZOR BY NORELCO IS THE GOLD STANDARD OF ELECTRIC RAZORS!!……. It is VERY EASY AND STRAIGHTFORWARD TO USE, IT SHAVES SO VERY CLOSELY….SO MUCH SO THAT IT IS LIKE YOU TOOK A BLADE TO YOUR FACE!! IT REMOVES ALL OF MY STUBBLE, AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, IT WILL NOT PULL YOUR OLDER HAIRS OUT LIKE AN EPILATOR. THAT HURTS , BUT YOU WONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT WITH THIS RAZOR. THIS IS AN AMAZING ELECTRIC RAZOR THAT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU. I FEEL ITS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THIS RAZOR HAS A VERY LOW HUM. IT IS NOT LOUD AT ALL, WHICH I TRULY APPRECIATE. I HAVE READ THAT SOMEONE HAD TROUBLE SHAVING WITH THIS RAZOR UNDER THE NOSTRILS, BUT I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH THAT. ITS DESIGNED TO FIT COMFORTABLY IN YOUR HAND AND ONTO YOUR FACE, AND IT HOLDS A CHARGE FOREVER IT SEEMS! IT SEEMLESSLY MOVES FROM YOUR FACE TO YOUR NECK. The POWER is STRONG and STEADFAST, it’s designed thoughtfully for COMFORT, and it’s EASILY PORTABLE. THIS PRODUCT IS THE BEST OPTION FOR THE JOB AND I HAVE THICK AND A LOT OF STUBBLE/HAIR ON MY FACE. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND CLEANING IT REGULARLY FOR BEST RESULTS. I had a corded Norelco 3 head shaver that I loved and it was absolutely bullet proof. It finally gave up the ghost after more than 40 years of service and I had to replace it. I bought the Norelco 5400 and was skeptical that it would live up to the old shaver. What a huge difference for the better. It shaves much closer than the old razor (which you would expect anyway) but this is exponentially better. I was also skeptical of having a rechargeable razor but the first charge lasted me 37 days of daily use (and had just gone down to 1 bar of charge). I don't know if I'll get 40 years out of this razor but clearly, Norelco is still making a high quality product. Would absolutely by this again.

I absolutely HATE this thing!!! I have been using the Norelco 2400 for 25 years and it was the best shave, always. It was/is $40 to replace, and after reading up on the technology and seeing the 5400 on sale for $59.99 I thought it was a no brainer. Wrong! The 2400 was dry shave only, and had fewer blades per head and less RPMs, but it could at least be used while plugged in if you forgot to charge it, had a long cord that didn't require a cell phone charger to plug into- and more importantly, it never PULLED my hairs! Rather it blazed through my tough beard in a hurry and left my face and neck as smooth as silk with the utmost in close and comfort - it always left my skin feeling healthy and so smooth in every direction. Also, it was the right size to hold on to, shorter and bigger around. This $90 thing is BS! NOT even close to the cheap model. I tried the usual dry shave and it pinched and pulled in every single motion. I hate the way it's so uncomfortable to hold - too narrow for big hands - and the pulling is utterly ridiculous! So I tried again, old Gillette manual style with hot water, holding a hot wash cloth on my face, and then working in the shave gel. This minimalized the pulling (although by no means eliminating it) and allowed the shaver to glide more and seemingly eork better. Rinsing it out more than I ever have had to I believed I was complete with my shave, and rinsed my face and toweled dry ... Only to discover the worst shave I've ever seen! I mean patches that were long enough to get with an edger, and others that were just like it couldn't be bothered to get them. And my face was blotchy and itchy as hell. I really can't believe it. I bought a different setup - shave butter and a brush to apply it. I tried everything from pressing down hard and moving in slow circles, to moving in a typical manual razor style, and to the other extreme of barely applying any pressure, and lightly and slowly going along - and then as a last ditch effort I tried moving in fast repetitive motions over and over until I was just fed up with this entire POS. I did also BTW take another shaver and cut the stubble to a short level - I used Wahl clippers with no attachment and I adjust the blades down to the point where they will cut you if you aren't careful - and then tried to shave with the 5400 - guess what? No different than any other previous tries. So I just wish I returned this piece of ---- and bought the 2400. It's the same price here as Walmart - $39.99. and I know that cuts clean and close and painless -- dry too... F this thing. Can't imagine what the $400 & $500 9000 versions do to the skin. Shameful. What a racket! And last thing - I can't believe the shiny happy reviews this thing has! What do they have for facial hair, peach fuzz? Jeez man I don't know but it's not for me... HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING THIS ONE. Power, ease of use? None and worse than the dentist for a root canal. Blade sharpnesss is fine, but it's not the same as the ones in the 2400 and 3900 - they criss cross and that's what makes it pull out the hair instead of cutting it. It lifts and plucks and with the water and shave gel or cream etc. it's like trying to shave with the 2400 in the hot humid summer when you are sweating. It goes over and misses the hair, well this one does that too BUT only in-between yanking out a bunch of hair in the process... Self sharpening blades... Riiiight. How to accomplish that without making an edge come in contact with something equal or harder than the titanium blade? Ohh we're going to just overlap them, and it shouldn't make it trap and pull the hair that's different lengths than the others... Or it might - Engineering department: F U it's not working! Stupid idea both in theory and in application. Disposable single blade dollar store razors dry cut better! Seriously! grrr i want my money back. Junk.

Shaver works well, nice smooth shave. Easy to clean. Very pleased with it. Had slight delay in delivery due to a hold up at Customs, but seller helpful.
