can this be installed 6 inches away from the wall, rather than right on the wall? My install situation requires it

I don't know. My gas company installed it and they have done several. I suspect for stability, it will need to be mounted.

Does this work when electricity goes out?

No. However it does come back on when electricity comes back on.

What is difference between ctp and dtp model? whcih is newer?

Same heater but ctp is wall thermostat compatible and around $400. more.
