Burmite amber formed at a time of a major change life on earth. The flowering plants were radiating rapidly, which had a major impact on the insect fauna. This is reflected in the amber as it contains a mixture of extinct and living families, and over 150 have now been recorded. The extinct families consist of some that are ancient and had previously only been found as older fossil in rock, and others that are unique to Burmite Amber. For same of the living families these inclusions are the oldest known fossil representatives in the world and have also revealed other interesting information. The mine of amber in Kachin State is really small with a limited annual extraction. Burmite has a Mohs scale hardness 2.5
