Good book, but you can definitely tell it was written in the 50’s because of the language used. Words kids don’t really hear today, like “swell” and things like that. It’s a good book though and I’m glad I got it for my 8 year old grandson.

I taught for 40 years in a public school. Boys that enjoyed sports read every Matt Christopher book in the library. I helped them get started reading chapter books and they began searching the shelves for books on athletes in the nonfiction section. I have given these as gifts.

Fun read. Some illustrations, and a bit larger print than most. 20 short chapters

Love Matt Christopher books!

I got this as part of my grandson’s birthday gift. He likes the author.

My 7 year old grandson loves to play baseball. He's in the first grade and had no problem reading this book. He loves these books written by Matt Christopher. The author is able to write to the reading level of young kids which keeps them interested in the book. My grandson did not have any problems retaining what he read and is very excited to read every night before bed. Highly recommend the books written by Matt Christopher.

My son loves baseball and it’s hard to find chapter books about it. This was a great one! He was able to read most of it himself.

My six year-old baseball-loving son really liked this book. It has a good message about confidence, and lots of play-by-plays. The book's quite dated -- kids go off to play unsupervised in the town's field, and the boy befriends a strange teenager in his small town -- but it was easy for me to explain these anachronisms to my son, and they give a sweet glimpse of 1950's life. Matt Christopher is no Dickens, but since we have to read sports books in my house, he's good enough for us.

One of my favorite childhood books. So glad I could find to pass forward to my son.
