    Critical read

*by Z***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 29, 2022*

This book is a brutal wake up call to the coming societal catastrophes that await us if we don't change our vision of the future. We need to change from our brand of fascism quickly or we could see the rapid militarization and imprisonment of large swathes of our population. There is still hope, but we need to act quickly.

Corporate Oligarchy; The Markets Flashy New Recipe For Despotism

*by G***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 13, 2016*

This book succeeds in exposing the failure of economics to recognize the impossibility of sustaining a market society at the expense of the welfare and wellbeing of society. What Derber makes clear, is that it is the carefully manufactured fiction of a self-regulating market itself, that is now facing a crisis of legitimacy, that can not be deferred by seeking justification with the rhetoric of economics. To the doctrine that there is no alternative (TINA) Derber replies, '"A newly intensified problem of "surplus people" is one of the great sociopathic crises of capitalism. The United States is no longer a manufacturing economy but it manufactures a huge surplus population of people. This includes not only the official unemployed and underemployed but millions of students, prisoners soldiers and retirees " This book goes on at length to propose that the alternative to facing this crisis and confronting the contradictions of capitalism, is a turn toward a more repressive corporately organized state or an even darker theocratic dominion. While his prognosis is chilling his analysis is the most wide ranging and intellectually satisfying among the many currently in print.

    Healing a Sick Society

*by S***K on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 27, 2017*

One cannot understand the sick idiocy of the United States without engaging this volume, for it identifies the social virus that is robbing this country of its full potential. Like Socrates, Derber shows that ignorance is not bliss--especially among leaders, elites, and their vested interests. The book is a must read for anyone mature enough to perceive the intellectual truth about the condition of this society.
