Rock Of The Westies

Best Elton John vinyl remaster I have heard to date.
I’ve been a fan of Elton John since I was about eight years old (way back in the mid-seventies) and I have a pretty comprehensive collection of his music both in CD and in original vinyl format. I also have most of the 2017 Mercury LP remasters minted in the EU up to this album. I can attest that “Rock Of The Westies” is the finest of the bunch from my personal experience. The sound quality is impeccable: almost zero surface noise, deep, dynamic, well-balanced between vocals and instruments. These remasters are famous for being extremely true in packaging to the originals, including sleeve formats (simple versus gatefold, inserts, record labels etc.) The only place where this doesn’t quite match up to the original is in the lyrics sheet, which is printed on flimsy paper rather than card stock – no big shakes. Other than that, this both stands up to my original (which still sounds fantastic all these years later) and adds the benefit of having been remastered with state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology.(Side note: My only wish regarding this particular LP purchase is that whoever packaged it for shipping had taken the extra effort to put it in a cardboard box, rather than simply slap a shipping label on the outer cellophane and send it out the door (see photo). Really, Amazon, you should be ashamed!)

Good except when it isn't....
Was looking VERY forward to checking out the sound of this "improved" reissue of the ugly stepchild of the peak EJ 70's catalog, especially after hearing Bob Ludwig's improvements with "Don't Shoot Me..." This record for many was the last great (OK...really good) Elton album, so it's not like my opinion of it's place in rock history is going to...change it's place in rock history. As a big fan of what Greg Penny did with the surround mixes of EJ's earlier catalog I was always miffed at why this LP, "Don't Shoot..." and "Caribou" never got the 5.1 treatment or even a cleaned up stereo mix back in. My vinyl copy of "Don't Shoot" was always a terrible sounding record even back in the day when I had a pretty good stereo system. I've read some reasons why on other forums-screw ups with the encoding of the tapes, etc..I purchased this and "Don't Shoot,,," on vinyl. I have what I consider a very nice $$,$$$ system with around $5k in the turntable and cartridge. Expecting Westies to be the better sounding record I was pretty disappointed; there was tons of surface noise, The singles were noticeably hotter than the surrounding tracks-much more so than the original LP, and distortions in some of the filler tracks actually made me stop and clean the stylus more than once to no avail. I can only hope my copy was just a dud. I could hear some improvements in separations and clarity tho the record has a pretty unexciting but most likely accurate tone to it. Far be it for me to critique the Legend Bob Ludwig but I sure hope the Greg Penny version of this album even without the 5.1 mix will actually see the light of day. Till them I'll make the most out of an improvement that keeps this music icon in the spotlight. 3 stars

Scratches and torn sleeve
Love Elton John! No overall scratches that affect the record, just some baseline. The sleeve on the other hand was basically torn apart completely, barley covering the record with tape.

Fun to repurchase this LP
When I was a kid, I received Rock of the Westies as a Christmas present. Elton John's creativity seemed to decline after this album was released.Island Girl and Robert Ford are by far the two best cuts. After seeing Rocketman in the theatre, I am an Elton John fan again.

Non mi ha convinto molto
E' il 13° Album di Elton John uscito nel 1975 è un album più Rock e meno melodico e forse mi ha convinto di meno.In questa ristampa Inglese che propone Amazon c'è la Bonus Track "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"Spedizione Amazon AAAAAAA++++++++++++

UU.
