Great little grinder within it's wheelhouse
Review is for KT Porlex Mini Coffee Hand Grinder. This grinder provides just the right amount of coffee for my Wacaco Picopresso and does so in a package that's no larger than it needs to be. This is important as my use is exclusively as a travel tool and I don't have space for large or heavy kit. The handle storage on the unit is exceptionally well done and appreciated to keep the package small. Since my use is for espresso, I ended up with a grind setting of 3 clicks from full closed to work best with the Picopresso and Lavazza Grand Reserva Espresso beans I use. The grind size under those conditions is actually MORE consistent than I find in Lavazza factory pre-ground espresso coffee that I occasionally buy. This unit provides a really nice grind in the espresso range. I haven't tried it farther open, you YMMV in those cases. Also, the capacity is limited to about 20 grams per grind so although it's PERFECT for my little Pico, if you want to make pots of french press, this grinder will require multiple loadings. It cleans up super easy with simple blow-off most of the time or a quick rise if you desire. I was pleasantly surprised to find the main shaft is designed to RETAIN the small spring that biases the burr set. I was afraid I'd have to give constant attention to not losing that spring, but the designers of this clever machine took care of it for me. Thank you Porlex! You're perfect for me!

Can grind fine enough to make espresso
Lots of cranking but this grinder produces very uniform and fine grounds, that my $250 electric burr grinder is unable to duplicate. For the first time I’m getting cafe quality espresso at home.

Great for traveling
I purchased this to go with my Aeropress when traveling. The quality of the grinds come out well. My arm gets a little tired from all of the manual cranking, but it's worth workout. :-) It's easy to take apart and clean. I use a tooth brush and some soapy water and then air dry.

Perfect compact grinder
I have been using the grinder on a daily basis since I received it a week ago. So far so good. At first it seemed challenging to have to grind coffee by hand before having had a cup already, but I can get into the ritual. I grind for aeropress and will be using it while traveling, but I hope it will work as well for espresso.

Very practical and super easy to use.
I’m no expert, however I’m impressed with the results I’m getting with this grinder. The actual grinding is easy to do and does not require much effort. If you are going for better tasting coffee, this one is for you!

Well made
I can't imagine a better manual grinder. But be warned that it takes about 100 revolutions per Aeropress scoop of beans (makes one cup). If you have more than one or two coffee drinkers in the household I'd say it's pretty impractical. If you've only got one, it's a perfect little morning workout.

small but great
It takes a while getting used to grinding your beans + some beans are harder to grind than other as it turns out. I think its a great machine that really lays the foundation for a nice cup of coffee. Its small + for me it takes about 2 minutes to grind enough for a nice expresso/ latte but I have it on a very fine setting. No regrets but of course an electric machine is easier although for the quality of the grind you get you would have to spend a lot of money on that electric machine!

Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum
Without having tried any other grinders and having only owned the Porlex Mini Hand Grinder for only a few months it's hard to give any real review beyond the fact that it grinds coffee beans well, it feels very well constructed and is easy to clean. It is only a "mini" grinder, so best for one or two cups. If you're regularly grinding enough coffee for more, then perhaps the non-mini version would be a better choice. Were I a giant, living in a castle in the sky with a particularly sensitive olfactory system and a desire for a loaf of unique artisan bread, having just discovered a trespassing Englishman who claims he arrived via a beanstalk, I'd also be reconsidering my purchase. For my purposes though it's great. Travels well, cleans easily, grinds perfectly. I generally grind for the Aeropress or French Press. Being medium to course grinds, it isn't too laborious. It may take a little more elbow-grease to grind fine espresso grinds, but I've not tried yet. I'm not a connoisseur of coffee by any means, but I could certainly tell that a cup of coffee from freshly ground beans has a nicer flavour. It may take a little more effort than instant coffee and I may not look as classy as George Clooney popping a pod in his Nespresso machine (it can promote a good gurn while grinding. Just don't hold it low, behind a counter, gentleman, while you have company. Not a good look) but i wouldn't go back to pre-ground. It's beans all the way now...
