## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do you secure this strip around the brewing jar?**
A: I use a rubber band to secure mine. Velcro strips or gaffer's tape would also work. If you're using this to brew kombucha or a comparable drink, whatever you do, don't set the jar on the heating pad, which is what another user recommended. That's the last thing you'd want to do. Doing this offsets yeast growth and will ruin batches. The variance in temperature throughout the container will also be greater.

**Q: I'm thinking of  this or the larger one for inside a little house I ordered for a feral cat, would it be adequate in frigid temps? It won't come insid**
A: Not a good choice as a heating mat for cats, because it will heat to 2 degrees above the cats body temperature.  I know this because my own old kitty, got on this mat when I was moving my dragonfruit babies from the mat to pot them up, said cat laid on it for the heat.  I let her do it for quite a while, even tho I knew it would get too hot for her.  She was on and off it, but it really would just get too hot.  So I finally broke down and bought a pet mat and wrapped a couple shirts around it.  That mat was a pet,  K&H 15.75x25.5 and sold on Amazon for 36$.  My old cat can lay on it all day without burning up.  This plant product wasn't intended for that much heat, it did ok, but works better for the purpose it was designed for.  Hope this helps, but I wouldn't do it myself, if only temporary until you could get a better "for pets" heated waterproof mat.

**Q: How long can it be plugged in for?**
A: Mine stays plugged in literally 24/7. I use it to start pepper seedings in January so I can't shut it off. I have had no issues with the surface underneath it overheating.

**Q: I have a 1 gallon glass jar for brewing kombucha in. Does the size of the mat make a difference? If so, which size is best - 3" x 20" or 10" x 20"?**
A: 10 by 20 is the best surface coverage. wrap it around the jug, not jug on top

This Vivosun Seedling Heat Mat has been a game-changer for me to be successful at making sourdough starter. My kitchen temperature fluctuates too much overnight, so this solved the problem. The heat mat keeps the ambient temperature consistently between 70-80° (usually 76) around the clock. The yeast is thriving. Even though the heat mat doesn't get "hot", I put a heat-resistant silicone mat underneath it as a precaution to protect the granite countertop. I also set the starter jar on a baking rack plus a thin piece of wood to keep it from coming into direct contact with the heat mat. I think it will come in handy when making baked goods that use yeast or sourdough to rise.
