Great EDC fountain pen.
This is my second Lamy Safari, and it's as good as the first, which means it's a good fountain pen. I do like the look of my other one better, in matte charcoal finish with a black nib, but that's purely cosmetic. The balance is good, and better when you have the cap seated on the barrel when writing, instead of held in your off hand. The medium nib on this one (my other Lamy is a fine nib) writes a tad wet, but it's smoother and less scratchy than the fine nib. I'm using it with the factory Lamy black ink cartridge, and have no leaks or problems. I just wrote with it after the pen being unused for about 10 days and it wrote instantly with no skips. The shape of the grip is perfect, and makes you hold the pen the right way for best writing. The pocket clip is strong, functional, and looks great. If you want a good fountain pen for not a lot of money, you could do worse than this one. I like the look and the technology (or lack of it?) in fountain pens. I'm not interested in $500 pens made of mother-of-pearl or $10,000 pens made of jade, and this one fills the bill. One drawback is it uses Lamy proprietary ink cartridges rather than the international cartridges, but Lamy cartridges are readily available, and the ink (the black, at least, the only one I've used so far) is very dark and vivid, smooth, and dries faster than other inks I've used. It can also use the Lamy Z28 Converter, so you can use any brand or color of ink you want. If you're thinking of a good EDC fountain pen, just because you're like me and think fountain pens are cool and look good (that nib on the paper looks so good, classy, and old-fashioned, I just love it), any Lamy Safari is a great choice.

No wonder it's a classic!
Welcome home, Safari! This pen was stolen from me way back in the early 90s. It was in a small NYC office filled with young artists who coveted such tools. My first Safari, bought in the 80s, was love at first write. Today, it's just as much of a pleasure if not more so. The gently textured plastic of my umbra version feels grippy. and warmly comfortable. The medium nib offer just the right amount of feedback without being scratchy or slippery. By contrast, my ancient Pelikan M600, also loved, is sometimes a bit too buttery for its own good. The clip and the little ink supply window, and the tripod grip--every bit of it is a delight. My only wish is that along with the elevated (yet still modest) price, it should have included a converter cartridge. Hoping this Lamy Safari stay with me for a long time. Am eager to try it with a stub nib.

I love this pen!
I love this thing it writes smooth and feels very nice to hold. Some pens like a platinum preppy do actually feel even smoother but have some minimal resistance feels better in a lot of ways. I love how it looks as it is clean and minimalist. It has a nice weight to it maybe some would prefer a heavier pen but it feels good to me. If you are looking for a first fountain pen get this or a kakuno if you want to spend a little less.

Excellent design
Light weight and great feel. Also love the rectangular body design which helps with the grip and also doesn't roll off the table when you place it down. Overall an excellent pen!

Great first fountain pen!
Awesome first fountain pen. Writes smoothly, is lightweight, and the cap is solid. Looking forward to using it for a long time and adding more Lamy pens to my desk!

Great starter pen!
Great pen for the price! The deal I bought doesn’t come with a converter so make sure you add 1 to your order or extra cartridges since it only comes with 1! Writes very smooth and does leak or dry up!

Disappointed
I put off buying a Lamy for a year because I thought it was overhyped, well I was right. I am very disappointed, it feels cheap and leaves blobs of ink at the end of every stroke. I tested on numerous types of paper with the ink that was included, and got the same results. The only good thing I can say is it is smooth.

Affordable and comfortable writing.
There something about cursive writing with a fountain pen. Lamy makes a great pen for that. I have written with Mont Blanc and Waterman pens and this is an affordable equal without the weight. The blue ink cartridge allows your work to “pop”.

Comfortable, reliable fountain pen that’s perfect for everyday writing
I’ve been using the LAMY Safari Umbra fountain pen regularly, mainly for note-taking and general writing, and it’s been a really dependable tool. The first thing you notice is the ergonomic grip. It’s shaped in a way that naturally guides your fingers, which makes it comfortable to hold for longer writing sessions without fatigue. The lightweight plastic body also helps — it doesn’t feel heavy or cumbersome, even after extended use. The medium (M) black steel nib writes very smoothly. There’s a nice balance between ink flow and control, producing clean, consistent lines without scratching or skipping. It works well on most standard paper and feels quite forgiving, which is ideal if you’re not constantly adjusting pressure or angle. In everyday use, it’s a very reliable pen. It starts writing quickly, and paired with LAMY cartridges or a converter, the ink flow remains consistent. It’s also quite durable — it feels like something designed to be used daily rather than kept as a display piece. The design is simple but distinctive. The matte Umbra finish gives it a more understated look compared to brighter Safari versions, which I personally prefer for a more professional feel. The only minor downside is that the grip section, being textured plastic, might not suit everyone’s preference, and the cap can feel a little firm when posting or removing. Overall, this is an excellent everyday fountain pen — comfortable, consistent, and very reliable. A great choice for students, professionals, or anyone wanting a dependable daily writer without fuss.

Good.
Very good fountain pen for any age, including a teenager or older, and perfect for everyday situations. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is it’s a wee bit overpriced, but fountain pens are expensive anyway so quite good price for a fountain pen with that quality.

Good way to start into the world of pens
This pen has made me fall in love with writing after all these years on a keyboard. I was searching for the right feel while writing, along with the perfect ink delivery. Not only does this pen give me this experience, but it has also helped me start correcting my grip. It's a process, but I love it
