Does this toy gun need batteries ?

No it's a single shot break barrel with pump action

When I try to "break the barrel", it doesn't seem to hinge. It looks and feels like it's going to snap in half. Anyone else feel this?

when it's new, you may have to really break the barrel over your knee. If it still doesn't want to break, send it back.

Where to buy Extra darts?

Amazon has knock-off darts for reasonable prices. They worked fine for all dart guns we own.
