RV 795, 7” GPS RV Navigator, Custom RV Routing | Directory of Parks and Services, Access Live Traffic and Weather, Up to 1 hour, 1 hour battery life

I have had one of these for three years and liked it. It became damaged from a corrosive gas. I ordered the same model since they work great and are small enough to put in a pocket, like a cell phone. Installation is easy and easy to update. Screen display is great and it does come in larger screen sizes, but I already have a couple other aftermarket displays in my truck so stayed with the 7". I use this with a travel trailer so the vehicle size/weight feature is very important.

It's not perfect when using it in the RV mode but it's still the best GPS I've used. It's easier to use the app to key in addresses and send to GPS than enter directly into the GPS. Good guidance for turns and lane choices to use.

We use this in both our car and our RV. We're pretty happy with it except it can be difficult to get an address in another city. It is supposed to link to my iPhone to show recent messages and tasks. I worked with customer service many times over the course of a couple of months and we weren't able to get it to perform without restarting the process every time that we got into the car. That was a big disappointment but that's secondary to the main use so we decided to live with that malfunction.

I bought the Garmin RV 795 because I have a 24' travel trailer and Google Maps is notorious for misrouting travelers into tight spaces. On a few trips it routed me incorrectly into places that were difficult to get out of in my pickup truck alone and would have been a nightmare with a travel trailer. So far, the RV 795 has only directed me on roads where a trailer can safely be towed. You need a lot of information about your trailer and tow vehicle to set this up but the information is readily available online. You'll need to know the width, height, and weight of your trailer, the weight and length of your tow vehicle, and the total length of the trailer and tow vehicle. You can create profiles for multiple vehicles & combinations so it's easy to switch from towing a trailer to tow vehicle only. The user interface takes a little getting used to but it's not terribly difficult. By default you cannot enter or change destination or settings while moving. That is good for the driver (eyes on the road, please!) but you can disable that so the passenger can make updates while the vehicle is in motion. I used the enclosed suction cup to mount the RV 795 on my windshield just below the rearview mirror. I haven't had a problem with the device attached to the mount but I remove and hide it when parked and twice the mount fell off of the windshield. Only seems to happen when the RV 795 is not on the mount. The Garmin makes it easy to find gas stations. It lists (most of) them in order of distance. The one thing to watch for is that the Garmin cannot tell you if a particular station has the space needed when towing a longer trailer. Best to follow the old rule of thumb when towing: start looking for a gas station when you get to half a tank. That will give you some slack if getting to, into, or out of the nearest gas station would be too difficult. It also has a long list of Campgrounds, State Parks, and RV parks. Updating the info is easy although it can be a bit cumbersome. It updates over wifi. If you have a hotspot on your phone you can use that but it might take quite a while. It works well with home wifi IF you have a way to power the RV 795. I used a ham radio power supply with a cigarette lighter plug like the one that powers the RV 795 while traveling. It would be nice if Garmin sold a power supply specifically for use at home with their GPS systems. The RV 795 give you a lot of information while you are traveling. In addition to directions, it will track your speed vs. the posted limit. Good for people with a lead foot! It also warns about upcoming sharp bends in the road. In my experience it was overly cautious about "sharp bend" warnings but I prefer that to being surprised. There are many other features such as satellite imagery that I've just begun to experiment with. Overall, this is a very useful aid for traveling in a recreational vehicle, especially if you are towing.

The seller was fine. The problem is the product. Several issues. 1. Apparently no working laptop planning tool. Route planning for day-trips is easy, but for multi-day trips you need to do the planning on a laptop. I have not found a laptop tool that will send a file to the 795 that works. Garmin has something called Basecamp. The 795 has a flaky relationship with Basecamp on a good day. On a bad day, it’s like dealing with an x-wife 10 years after a messy divorce. For some reason, the 795 messes with the GPX files and corrupts the files. Before I purchased the 795, I confirmed with Garmin that it was compatible with Basecamp. What they did not tell me at the time was that Garmin is no longer supporting Basecamp and hasn’t updated it in several years. Ultimately what this means is that a simple software update to the 795 could cause it to no longer communicate with Basecamp. 2. Autozoom works or doesn’t work for no apparent reason. You can be in the middle of Dallas with it zoomed out to five miles, or in the middle of West Texas with it stuck at 500 ft. It may work fine, or it may not work at all. Basically, there is no auto in auto zoom. This was a function that worked well with my older Garmin Nuvi 3. Warnings. These are best left off. The sharp curve warning is flat out dangerous on the 795. Going down the Interstate, on a flat road, I was getting sharp curve warnings. It turned out to be warning me about the turns at the foot of exits as I was passing by. This was when I was on a route, and those exits were NOT on the route. On the other hand, more than once I’ve been on the Interstate, and had Interstate signs that warned of curves, that the Garmin didn’t know about. I finally turned that function off. It’s better off not being there than to have it work the way it does. It is flat out unsafe. I have a background in Systems Safety Engineering and Human Factors Engineering and warned Garmin about this and been ignored. 4. The 795 lets you input the size of your RV and warn you when IT believes that a road isn’t compatible. Sounds good. When I’m driving the RV on a route, and I ignore the RV Vehicle profile because I know the road is acceptable, the Garmin shuts down the route. I’ll repeat, it BLEEPING SHUTS DOWN!!! It doesn’t turn off, but it stops the route, and doesn’t restart it when I’m back on the highway. That then necessitates my wife having to restart the route with the next waypoint, which often is not easy. If I were alone, I’d be in a world of bad hurt. If the vehicle profile worked the way it really should, it should prompt the driver as to what in the profile is being violated (length, weight etc) and ask to proceed. But shutting down??? That’s just not right. Garmin has lost its way with their automotive products. They don’t know who their customers are, or how they use them. I have exchanged emails with every one of these issues to their tech support, and done innumerable tests and factory resets at their request. I have even exchanged my 795 with Garmin in the hope that there was maybe an issue with that production lot. No change. I used an earlier Garmin Nuvi for about 40,000 miles and it worked reasonably well. I bought the 795 because the connection pins on the Nuvi were wearing out. I’ve since driven the 795 about 10,000 miles. It is simply put, a piece of crap.

Purchased this unit to replace a non-rv model. This works really well to help you avoid pain points when towing ( low bridges, weight restricted bridges, sharp turns, etc). The only fault I can find with the routing is it may take you a slightly longer way to get to your destination.

A few things about this device are wonderful — the ability to input destinations on my phone is both clever and surprisingly useful; the data integration with the phone works without any configuration and flawlessly providing real time traffic etc. The touchscreen is intuitive, responsive, and easily configurable. I LOVE the ability to set my top speed and height, and it reliably routed me around several low bridges during our trip. But at the same time this device is a trip back into a time when Garmin was the big name in dash units and the technology would route you into a farm field if you weren’t careful. Within minutes of setting it up, the device got incredibly confused by a Diverging Diamond highway exit and tried to route me around in circles. Later it got confused and assumed that an address on a frontage road was actually on i90, costing us almost 25min driving back and forth between exits. The next day it helpfully suggested that I take a right turn into a recently plowed farm field! So on the one hand it’s a really useful piece of technology and I love that I don’t need to roast my phone in the window. And on the other, keep on your toes, Garmin is still trying to kill you.

I have been a dedicated Nuvi user for years. I bought this RV795 for our Class B - I love it! We don’t do RV parks preferring to be nestled somewhere in the woods. When we are on the road with no particular direction, this makes finding our next campground super easy. I haven’t figured out how to do a breadcrumb trail like my Nuvi’s yet, but I’m sure it will. I like the speed reduction/increase, sharp turns, steep grade, etc. warnings too. Worth the investment and highly recommend. Thanks Garmin!

The beauty of this unit is the size, quality, and dependability. We like the fact that you input your coaches measurements, then no need to worry about road restrictions or bridges etc. Also with this GPS you are not using data to increase costs and with the GPS you are less likely to loose the signal. Best bang for the buck!

Like the screen and most features (e.g. the break scheduler is nice), but really odd routing for custom routes. If the custom route folds back on itself (e.g. delivery runs), it keeps track of which flags are done so far, but sometimes it sees a known road and just forgets all about what flags are done/upcoming, and just jumps ahead/back to another point in the custom route that uses the same road. Also occasionally avoids some weight-restricted roads even if you choose 'Car' profile. There is no way to report these type of issues from the unit, and I often forget to go online after my trip, so who knows if Garmin is even aware of these issues. Since there's a paired app for live traffic, it seems there should also be a "report an issue" feature.
