You arenโt what you think! For teens with negative thinking habits, a licensed psychologist and a health journalist offer cognitive restructuringโa simple and effective cognitive behavioral approach to help you break free from the nine most common negative thinking habits that typically result in feeling sad, worried, angry, and stressed. This workbook offers a powerful technique called cognitive restructuring to help you reframe your thoughts, regulate your emotions, become a more flexible thinker, and stop letting your thoughts define who you are and how you feel. Youโll learn to target the nine specific kinds of negative thinking habits that can cause you to worry or feel bad, such as the I canโt habit, the doom and gloom habit, the all or nothing habit, the jumping to conclusions habit, and more! Each chapter will walk you through simple explanations of each kind of negative thought, and offers real-life examplesโas well as the sorts of behaviors, emotions, and bodily sensations that might be expected. You'll also gain an understanding of unhelpful or unrealistic thoughts, how to challenge them, how to replace them with more realistic and helpful thoughts, and an action plan for moving forward. By recognizing these negative thinking habits, youโll feel more in control and less anxious and sad. Most importantly, youโll be able to see yourself and the world more clearly. Your thoughts donโt have to define who you are and how you experience life. The transdiagnostic approach in this book will show you how to kick negative thinking habits to the curb for good! This book has been selected as an Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Book Recommendation โan honor bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives. Review: Well thought out, accessible resource for teens - What makes this book great, in my opinion, is the structure of it. The authors divide up negative thinking into nine types. This enables teens to focus on just the one chapter(s) that applies best to them. Each chapter has helpful tidbits and, importantly, exercises for readers to do. And the writing/editing was very smart in its approach -- the authors make great use of bullet points and charts and generally a very accessible style. A very smart approach -- highly recommended! Review: Shifting Mindsets - I used this book to make a lesson for my seventh grade students on changing their mindsets. Some mindsets in the book seemed to overlap each other or be similar. This made it hard when kids were trying to figure out the difference between the mindsets. However, most students were able to find at least one mindset that they connected with and applied to them. I used the book to define the mindsets in the book, talk about how to break or shift the mindset, and then gave students a scenario and asked them how to apply and shift the mindset. This ended up being my favorite lesson this year and it was one of the lessons I received the most positive feedback from students and staff. I also used the book during my girls' self esteem group to connect how these mindsets can affect their self esteem. This book was definitely worth the money and I will reuse it a lot in the future.

GREAT for teens, families and clinicians!!
This workbook is a *must* for clinicians and their teen clients, as well as for families who aren't working with a professional. Well organized, accessible and informative, this guide provides valuable explanations and activities that tweens/teens can easily understand, without sounding condescending and without the excessive wordiness so often found in self-help resources. Addressing negative thinking habits can be one of the most valuable -- and challenging! -- issues for teens, and this workbook not only breaks that process down into manageable steps, but also illustrates why the process itself is worth it. Straightforward organization allows adolescents to move through the workbook independently if they choose, and the activities are relevant and thorough without being overly time-consuming. It's also a terrific resource for parents trying to support and connect with their teens, and a wonderful adjunct for therapists looking for effective clinical tools. I applaud Dr. Alvord and Ms. McGrath for creating this gem!

Excellent Book for Graduate Students/Clinicians new to CBT
As a graduate student in a clinical psychology doctoral program, I have found this book extremely helpful not only in my work with clients, but also as a clinician in training. This book provides solid coverage of the cognitive distortions that contribute to negative thinking patterns, as well as a step by step action plan for how to switch these thinking patterns. The examples provided in each chapter have been very relatable to the clients I've used this book with (including adult clients!), but it also includes room for the client to self-reflect and come up with their own examples. I would definitely recommend this book to any clinician interested in learning more about CBT and how to actually implement the skills into sessions. I'd also recommend this book to any adolescent or adult as a self-help book.

Kid and teen friendly and useful workbook to help address negative thinking
As a clinical psychologist working in childhood anxiety and OCD, I am always on the look out for good workbooks. Many times kids and teens dismiss workbooks that are available because the examples do not reflect their experience or their complexity. In Dr. Alvord's books and workshops, you can tell she is someone who talks with kids, likes kids, and works with kids. So she knows how they think when in distress and how to help them find their way out. Dr. Alvord and her co-author Ann McGrath add a book that is really needed. Many kids or teens have negative thinking that is a source of their difficultlies either with no diagnosis or in the context of anxiety and depression. By offering separate sections on the different thinking traps kids, teens, parents or therapiist can focus their work with practical suggestions. A really helpful and useful resource

Highly Practical Workbook Grounded in Scientific Research
Written by an internationally-recognized expert in the field, Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens is a highly practical workbook that should be read broadly. It is helpful for teens experiencing negative thinking, including those facing stressors, depression, anxiety, anger, and related problems. The book is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an approached that has been demonstrated to be helpful in hundreds of scientific studies. Dr. Alvord has skillfully incorporated evidence-based CBT practices into exercises that teens will actually want to do. It is easy to use and accessible to teens and parents alike, and is simultaneously instructive for therapists and child psychiatrists like myself looking for the best ways to mobilize resilience in our patients.

A good introduction to CBT for teen
For anyone with a teen who is struggling and either is resistant to going to therapy or needs something in addition to therapy to work on at home, this is for you. Itโs an accessible, relatable Introduction to cognitive behavioural therapy for teens. What I like most is that the writer did not underestimate the readers. Intelligent wording is used, there is no condescending tone or patronizing language. The examples have been amended to be more relevant to teens,, and some of the psychological lingo has been put into more plain language, but it is still an accurate and helpful CBT workbook.
