Spend literally a couple of bucks, and you get a much better unit - this one!
This replaced a very minimal 12 year old unit, one of those "just the heating coil" cheapos. I had no idea how much I had shortchanged myself 12 years ago, this is so much better. The glass top really makes a difference in heat distribution, the old unit had a hotspot in the middle and cooled gradually to the edges. Not so with this, seems even from edge to edge. The old unit's control know would not turn off the element. Not a defect, other buyers complained of it (so I knew it before buying). This one turns completely off fully counter-clockwise and that is so handy. Of course you shouldn't depend on this, but it's convenient when dinner's hot & ready, I don't have to immediately unplug it. And the markings are wonderful, easy to see. Old unit just had a "pointer" with no reference marks at all, really all so arbitrary I hardly used it for temperature control at all. Finally, those "coil only" units have a design flaw built in, that is if you expect them to last. I suspect they are all like the one I had, although I'm not going to purchase any more just to find out. The coil has little integral legs that allow it to set in place. But the coil is free to flop around. The 2 wires that supply power to the coil are directly attached to it, underneath in the base unit. They take a beating from the movement and break off. They are difficult to deal with as they can't be soldered, they are connected with 1/4" fast-ons. The only way I got 12 years out of that unit was by repairing those wires more times than I can count, usually right in the middle of preparing food, not the most pleasant experience when your belly is rumbling. This unit may have the same system, but the glass top keeps the coil from flopping about and your pans sit on the glass, avoiding the constant moving of the coil, so this *should* work better. Time will tell.Every time I cook now I am thrilled with this unit. I'll never go back to "el cheapo" and neither should you.

Cooks stuff well, knob gets really hot
This has more power than I expected. I am able to cook all the usual stuff I cook (mac n' cheese, chicken ramen, pork ramen, beef ramen, not crab ramen because that stuff is terrible, green beans, Bush's baked beans, etc) and it only takes a little longer in most cases (your stove will have more power). It's a little small if you are using a large frying pan, but you can look at the size specs and you can know what to expect. So 5/5 stars for all those aspects. It works well and is easy to clean. It's stays in place well and seems fairly safe relative to other hot plates. My only beef with this thing is the control knob gets really hot and the numbers on the knob wore away in just a few uses. So if you have it turned up all the way and need to turn it down, sometimes the knob is quite hot. It's not hot enough to melt the knob, and it doesn't prevent you from turning the knob, but it's hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch for more than a few seconds at a time. That's really not great and the reason I bumped this down to a 4 star. The knob really should be cool even if the device is running at full blast unless I guess you like a few unnecessary challenges when you're cooking or if you're a glutton for punishment. If you're into that, then this would be a 5/5 for you.

Powerful burner, perfect size for tea kettles or small pot/pan
I looked at so many different burners before deciding on this one, and I definitely made the right choice.I've been using this daily to heat a full-size kettle of water each morning. The kettle fits perfectly on the burner, with the edges just barely on the outside. It does just as fantastic a job today as it did when I got it 8 months ago. It holds 100% heat (does not cycle or switch off/on) until full rolling boil. The burner is super bright and super hot just as it should be. While I haven't cooked with it yet, I have full confidence it would make easy work of any smaller pots or pans that would fit on it.

Modern looking, easy to clean, and long lasting.
Tremendous value, easy to clean and durable, have had for over two years without an issue, I set mine on a Wi-Fi capable outlet and since there is nothing near it and no open flame, nor extremely open archaic hot rails, I feel safe remotely heating a frozen soup or a moka of coffee ready as I get home. I have a failsafe timer setup should I have a heart attack or forget for some reason. So basically it's very useful and as modern as a hot plate can get, beyond induction models, which I have not found with a hard lock switch, otherwise those are better over all for sure. I have those to, but for actual in person cooking, this is also considerably cheaper. Suitable for a college dorm, portable, very lightweight so great for camping with an inverter or large powerbank, but I would still add a smart/timer outlet for an added layer of safety and or convenience in most cases, Imagine camping going for a hike and knowing you aren't going to burn your dinner. Also it's completely quiet, beyond a light click when the heating element is engaged, and I suppose the fact it glows makes it safer that the older rail models, as you can see its on from further away. Hope this was useful, thanks for listening.

Heats water fast
Boils water very fast. I don't know what product people are reviewing but this product is awesome. Only pickup is that the unit stays hot after use. I just fill a pot with cold water and leave it on top and it speeds up the cooling process.

it works great!
I have had this for over a month now and use it daily to warm up my water from a teapot. I also use it most days to either warm up soup in a regular soup pot or fry eggs or a stir fry with a pan. I have had no problems with it, and while it will stay hot for a little bit when you turn it off, it cools off much faster than the other kinds of 'hot plates" and traditional burners. The only issue I had was due to my own situation of living in a small place. I left a plastic electric water warmer on top of it due to space issues, and plugged in this product instead of the water pot, resulting in melting and ruining of the water pot. The melted plastic went all over this product, but I was able to scrape it off once it cooled, and this product still works perfectly. It is not quite as pretty, as there is some discoloration from the black melted plastic that I had to chip off, and the markings on the knob that you use to turn from low to high came off, but again that was my mistake. So, if you live in a small place, please be sure to never leave anything on top of it so that you will not accidentally plug in the wrong thing causing the item on top to burn or melt. This would be the case with any burner, and at least this one was sturdy enough to make it through me chipping off the dried melted plastic from the burner itself and within the crevices around it. I would buy this again if ever needed. It does heat up water and food as quick as you could need.

Pay attention to the style you order!
Zero stars if i could, i have only tried to use it three times but can never get thru one minute bc of a strong chemical smell. Thought it was my pan but ive tried several and i have the same problem. A friend has this brand but the cook top is different so make sure to order the cast iron one bc she says it does not have this problem. They are the same price so just go with that one, i wish i did bc now i have a dangerous piece of junk and im out money since i waited until after the return window, i also tried to reach out to the company for support but none of the links from amazon work.
