Excellent Book
I honestly don't understand the reviews that complained about the font being illegible or the colors not being complimentary. Everything is legible, and I had no problem reading the text. Its a great book and if you're interested in Animie this is a good place to begin on the classics.

BEAUTIFUL Book With Some Readability/Layout/Image Choice Issues
First of all, I have never heard this podcast, have no idea who these guys are, never heard of them. So I have no bias of familiarity. That said, these guys know how to WRITE and certainly know to write a review (I should know, I've been writing reviews for decades). Their book is a GOOD READ, and how many coffee table books can you say that about? And yes, this book is GORGEOUS. Many, many of the pictures chosen for display are the orignal film posters and they make the often-chosen DVD box art look like garbage. I kinda want to own the book just for large (but sadly not full-page) images of classics like Roujin Z and The Animatrix. But also...sadly...there are page layout/design/readability issues that plague this otherwise awesome book. But I'm getting ahead of myself. A Loving Tribute To Animé Films First of all, this book is less like a dated animé book from decades age or an animé book from recently and more of a book that seeks to blend the two seemlessly. You have archaic films like Little Norse Prince (recently remastered and released on Blu Ray; CHECK IT OUT!!!) and modern classics like Belle and Promare. This book goes beyond nostalgia to encompassing HISTORY and CONTEXT. You don't just hear urban myths (Steven Spielberg is a fan of this film!), you hear myths debunked (THERE IS NO PROOF Steven Spielberg was a fan of this film!!!). You don't just hear hype (THIS IS THE GREATEST ANIMÉ EVER!!!), you hear rationalization (This was a film that was shocking and bleeding edge at the time of it's release). If you like thoughtful analysis of films and actual contextual critique, so often claimed by so often lacking by clueless "film critics" you will find this a treat. An Almost Perfect Picture Book If you love film poster books and film art and animé artwork you will ALMOST be in heaven. There's a weird juxtaposition mash-up of this brilliant film poster artwork (I've been looking for that poster of Roujin Z for years) and very very bland film stills of nothing in particular. As a person who loves film art and artwork in general I find this infuriating. When you've got Wings of Honneamise and Castle of Cagliostro and Metropolis and Millennium Actress to choose from, I don't understand picture of people sitting and standing when there's all these iconic moments to choose from. Were they afraid of using print scans instead of film cells and that was all that was available to them in that format? Personally I would rather have a lower quality image of a great moment than a great image of a bland one. Then there's the formatting/readability issues. Almost Readable This is a very very hard book for me to read. Not only is it on dull dim paper (popular as an alternative to glossy super-bright paper that costs more [I think???]), but the text is in tiny grey font that blends in with the colored/shaded boxes. Seriously. I'm getting old. I can't read that tiny text. Maybe if the text filled the pages to the margins I could see cost-cutting as an excuse, but no, THERE'S HUGE WHITE MARGINS AROUND THE TINY TEXT. Seriously? What the heck??? Why have beautiful pictures and wonderful writing and then fill your book with white space so the pictures and type are so small you can't see or read them??? The Film Selection The authors made it plain in the introduction that their film choices weren't meant to be YOUR film choices, and are more a springboard for thought than definitive. So yeah, I'm not a fan of some these films and never ever want to see some others, but the ones that I HAVE seen get the royal treatment here and are presented as serious films and works of art rather than financial flop failures and middling bonus features that some people would treat them as (was I the only one who took The Animatrix seriously back in the day?). Sure, I wish Beyond The Clouds: To the Promised Place was the Shinkai film selected, I wish Summer Wars or Wolf Children was on the list instead of other films. I wish Appleseed Ex Machina, Macross Plus, and Jungle Emperor Leo would get some love. But the selection of films here...is fine. Maybe I'll watch a few of these I haven't already seen. But even the ones I have, I will get new appreciation and context for thanks to this fine book. This isn't a perfect book. It REALLY needs better paper and larger, clearer text. But even so, the strong poster artwork (WOW!!!) and strong writing make it a must-read for fans of Animé Film.

Really Nice Book
I was surprised by this book. There is a lot of info that I just wasn't aware of, so that makes it interesting and fun to read. I actually learned about a few new anime that I just was not aware of. The only issue I have with the book is that it has a white/cream color cover, so it will get dirty pretty fast. In fact, the one I was sent, was already dirty with fingerprints and some black markings, not sure what those are from. Other than that, it's a really fun and interesting book.

Do not buy the Kindle Version!!!
Somehow the words in the Kindle version stick into each other. I tried on different devices but all of them had the same issue.

Beginners guide
The content is good and it is definitely a good beginners guide to anime. I discovered some new movies through this. It also has the same friendly charm as the podcast. Unfortunately putting small black type on bright or dark colored backgrounds makes many of the reviews almost impossible to read. I do wear reading glasses but I've never had a harder time physically reading as I did parts of this book.
