Works surprisingly well. Saved me from being out of gas on Memorial Day!
I bought this for a few reasons, I used to have a gauge inline with the tank, but my newest grill only provided enough hose length to be exactly form the tank to the burners with no slack for an item that was 6 inches long, much less 1 inch even. Another is the new grill had the tank directly under the grill and behind a door, so I needed something more obvious than a sticker or gauge that I couldn't see normally. After some research I came upon this doo-hicky, and let me tell you it was a great buy.I had the feeling i might have been running low on the tank when I began grilling during the week before, but it's a pain to remove the tank just to check it. While I was putting the meat on the grill I heard a little electronic chiming, opened the door to the tank and sure enough it was bleeping at me. After dinner, I took the tank out and sure enough I needed a refill and was able to get it before the Holiday rush. I had enough gas to cook dinner, so it warned me in time.

Only minor drawback - IT DOESN'T WORK!!!
I purchased this item last summer since my lake house grill propane tank had been in sporadic but heavy use all season. No problems attaching to the tank, no problems with flashing red light, and no signal that propane level was low, all through the fall and spring this year. Yesterday (note today's date please) during the big cookout, the flames died abruptly and without ANY type of alarm. Yup, empty propane tank. Fortunately brats can be broiled inside. The Gas Genie continued to flash its little red LED the entire time, and never made a peep. I'd recommend you not waste your $20 on this device.

It works; do follow instructions carefully
Updated 12/2014: It works! I followed the instructions more carefully the second time around. I still don't run my grill at high heat for 10 minutes at the start of each cooking session, but it seems I must be running it enough. I was delighted to hear it start singing its tune one day. We had enough gas to finish the cooking and later get the tank refilled. I would recommend this to gas grill users, it's the one solution we've found for preventing an out of gas cooking incident. The red lights continue to blink away all day and night, all these months now.Updated: I did not follow their instructions precisely, so I may be at fault here. First: I don't run my grill at high heat for 10 minutes at the start of each cooking session. I just can't see me burning that much propane to prep the grill. Also, I didn't start using it with a full tank. It's possible my tank was too low to start with. Since I didn't follow the instructions I've bumped this from 2 to 3 stars.Original review: I've had this unit for not quite 2 months, and my propane tank finally ran dry today, in the middle of cooking chicken. Without warning from the Genie. I did not see the red light flashing, so I think it may not have been working. I opened it up, pressed on the batteries, and it came back to life. It appears the batteries can slip out of location and cause the unit to turn off. Unless you are watching for the flashing lights every time you use the grill you are at risk. Pity, it seemed like a good idea and I was excited about the product. Now I can't even return it because it is over 1 month old. If you are going to buy this, keep an eye on the red lights. I'm not giving up and I will try it again.Just a few days ago the company contacted me to ask for feedback. That was mighty nice of them, and earns them an extra star above. I told them I didn't know how to check if it will sense properly, and they told me how to restart it-- but not how to check if it senses correctly (I was unclear in how I asked my question I admit); and I should see their website for tips (but didn't give the hyperlink for their website.) By the time I got around to seeking out their website the failure had already happened. Now I see that other users have triggered it by setting the unit higher on the tank. I wish I had done that.

The magnets need to be stronger
Mine won't stay attached to the tank. The magnets are very weak. I even peeled off the tank label where I wanted to place the unit and it still grabs very weakly on the vertical side of the tank. If I roll my grill on our small concrete patio even a short distance the slight vibration makes the gauge fall off. There's nothing special about my tank. It's just a common Blue Rhino tank.I suppose I have a defective one, since even refrigerator magnets stick strongly to the tank. I'm going to have to find some sort of strap to keep it in place.

Not sure how accurate it is.
Well, I've had this on my tank for a couple months. Tends to "chirp" even though the tank is still half full. My tank sits in a opening under the Grill, so the unit isn't attached all the way down. It might work on free standing tanks well, but if yours goes into an opening, not sure how accurate it will be. Tonight we were doing steaks and the beeper started. I wiggled the tank and felt for where the "cold" line was ( the lower the cool feeling, the less gas in the tank) ... and it was mid tank. I think the only true way to know how much gas you have is to actually weigh it.

You really do need one of these if you use your grill a lot! UPDATED May 2015
If you have looked for this type of product, you know they are not all that easy to find. I was delighted when I found Amazon offering this one.I have used it for a few weeks now, and I am confident that it does the job. Here is what you need to know:1. the gauge needs to sit as low as possible on your tank. My tank sits in a holder, so I can only get it so low on the tank. However, this did not seem to affect accuracy (based on one tank that ran out of propane). The device attaches with magnets and is easily removed and reattached.2. When the tank is near-empty, the device emits a tone similar to a video game. The tone is continuous once it starts chirping until you shut off the tank valve. I found that I had about three 1/2-hour uses left once the alert started.3. It requires two AA batteries. So far, so good!UPDATE May 2015: It has been two years since I started using this gauge. The original batteries still have life in them. The item continues to work as well as it did fresh out of the box. This is a fine, fine gauge and well worth your consideration. I have found it to be 100% accurate.
