They have a separate solar panel and it must have a good rechargeable battery (1000 MaH or higher), because they are the first to come on in the evening, and they are still lit when I've leaving for work at 5 am! Highly recommend. UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: The lights started failing, but only a few of the bulbs wouldn't like. Hoping it was a bettery thing, I decided to replace the batteries (you won't believe how much time I spend replacing solar batteries ....). Battery change didn't help - might have something to do with the wiring, Each 'branch' is an individual light wired to the motherboard, so you could see how this would happen. I still like the idea of these, but I might see if there is another model that is built more robustly.
