I think you should ask the manufacturer of the fire. Impeding exhaust flow might be lethal, generating carbon monoxide, and only they could know. Of course they will probably decline to answer because of lawyers fears. My *guess* is that the material will hold up well, but you'd need to try it, and use a CO detector, and probably a combustible gas detector too, to check carefully that nothing bad is happening.
