I believe the butyl tape comes off the roll at 1/8" thick. Do not stretch it as it's applied to a surface as it is meant to be compressed between two surfaces to create a seal. **Q: Backer is real thin, tears easily and lays down wrinkled, why offer such an inferior product?** A: I've never had a problem with butyl tape purchased on Amazon. Backer is a throw-away. It's only purpose is to keep the butyl roll from sticking to itself. Wrinkled tape? Not an issue. It rolls out easily and is flattened easily. "Inferior product?" Nope. It's the best product for its intended purpose. Yesterday I took out my three-year old roll of Amazon-sourced butyl tape that lives in the basement of my fifth wheel to seal a new two-piece door latch. It looked, felt, and worked just as well as when it was a brand-new roll out of the package. Feels quality, but I have nothing to compare it to, as this was my first time using a product like this. It absolutely does not stick to a dirty surface, but it seems to adhere extremely well to a well prepped surface.
