Slight inaccuracy - steps on cone will not match blade hole size
Basically it works in principal. Two balancing cones were received which are identical. They are plastic and therefore fairly durable, but will not withstand any even slightly rough use. They must be treated as a precision instrument and used carefully. I have used the same blade in the lawnmower for about 15 years. It still works very well and since the blade is not split, bent or distorted, it balances fairly well and cuts well enough for a domestic lawn. I top dress the lawn every 5 to 10 years so the bumps are not too bad and the mower does not scalp high points, etc. I sharpen the blade once a year, and only if I think that it will make an obvious difference. Before using this device the blade was sharpened about 3 years ago and balanced using a nail. This is definitely a better method. First make sure that the table or workbench is level. If you are outside use a short plank and wedge it so that it is level. Then use the cone in the hole in the middle of the plank and adjust the blade by grinding off any excess so that the ends of the blade are the same height above the plank. When the blade is level and balanced the best you can, then you have gone as far as this device can help. In practice it is going to be good enough because after a few uses and stone /concrete chips it will be out of balance a little bit anyway. It is not perfect and lawn mowers are fairly rough machines going over rough ground not polished surfaces, anyway. BUT and there is a BIG BUT ... The cone is stepped to accommodate different sizes for the central hole of the lawnmower blade. This is OK in THEORY but in practice the steps will never quite fit the hole in the blade. It would have been helpful if the steps in the two cones were different by 50% and if the blade hole was loose on one cone it would be a better fit on the other. This means that you have to position the hole in the blade as best you can on a step in the cone. If it is positioned to one side or the other it will make a big difference. As mentioned above, in practice you just have to do the best you can and after a little use it will be slightly out of of balance anyway.

Does the job!
You get what you pay for... They are cheap plastic, but they work. I suspect there are better metal ones out there but in terms of plastic ones, this is probably as good as they get. I have sharpened 3 blades and 2 were perfectly balanced but the 3rd was awful... Which I knew from the horrendous vibration on the mower, but after grinding the blade a few extra times the one side it balanced out excellently. I know there are other methods (nail in wall etc.), but this does the job very well. With stepped rings it will fit an array of blade sizes.

I didn't know I need this until now
Used to balance the blades after sharpening... God, why didn't I know about this item before... I'd always used a nail through the centre and balanced it that way. This is waaaaaay better. Ride on blades are so smooth now, with no noticeable wobble A++++
