I never actually had to get into the wool blanket, just slept under the camp blanket. The layer of canvas definitely holds warmth in and also keeps a small blanket from falling off of you. It's pleasantly wide and much more comfortable than a standard sleeping bag. There is a zipper on each side so it's easy to put your blankets in and get in and out of.

Years ago, I had a tent made of this very type of canvas, canvas that’s made to last a lifetime. This Helko waxed canvas bedroll will last a lifetime, leastways the lifetime of anyone who uses it. Eventually my canvas tent developed dry rot, something that may happen to this bedroll … in a century perhaps. This bedroll is really heavy, something that will probably make thru hikers take a pass. On the other hand, for those who are into adventure and want to camp anywhere, this Helko would be of high interest. Any adventure or someone who simply likes to rough it on the spur of the moment will love this high-quality bedroll. The super-heavy canvas can be place on any kind of level surface without water or moisture seeping though. I put it on cold, frozen ground and when I put my hands inside the bedroll it was dry. The waxing will also make it easy for me to keep it somewhat clean. After using it outside, it did accumulate a lot of dirt. I was easily able to wipe it down and fold it back up. I’m probably not the intended audience for this bedroll, although I would consider using it car camping. I do have one relative who seriously is into roughing it and will probably borrow it now and then. This Helko does have room inside for a sleeping bag or blanket. The canvas is rough and not all that comfortable without having something as a barrier. The hardware on the Helko is seriously top notch. The zipper is metal as are the buckles. I definitely appreciate having decent hardware on this as it will not be gently used. The leather is a very high-quality one. I’m not seeing any bluish color anywhere, something that would indicate a poor quality. The leather is heavy and, where needed, perfectly stitched. The exposed edges of the roll have a heavy bias tape. No, a waxed canvas roll like this is not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. The Helko is very high-quality and not a purchase to take lightly. It will last a lifetime, as I mentioned, provided reasonable care is taken to store it well in the off season. Definitely love everything about this bedroll and would highly recommend it to the serious adventurer or camper
