4 & 3/4 stars, I do really really like this vacuum
Let me just start by saying I poured over a ton of reviews of different Dyson models before buying, and on finally deciding on this one (Animal 3), was *hoping* the negative reviews weren’t huge red flags. I’ll get specific with my skepticism in this review as it would’ve helped me when shopping. The listing I purchased from was for Animal 2, Animal 3, and Animal 3 Extra models, and comparing basically ALL reviews for the 3 models, I chose Animal 3 and I’m glad I did. First: the bad reviews stating this vacuum won’t go on thick carpet ALMOST had me convinced not to buy it. Even Dysons site has multiple bad reviews stating the same, more bad than good on their own website! I’m happy to report I have zero issue with this with my shaggy, thick, plush carpets. If it’s on either of the carpet settings it moves just fine. Adjust your vacuum and go. I’d had a ball Dyson in the past, and I didn’t love it. This was another hesitation. The swivel/ball mechanism on my previous one was loose and flowy, but this meant the thing would curve around just when I was trying to push it straight. This Animal 3 does not do that. It’s a bit tighter, it stays straight but is easy to curve when you want. My previous Dyson also toppled over anytime I was tugging at the hose and this one, probably because it’s a little heavier, stays up even when the hose is really extended and being jostled around. PROS: excellent suction, it moves well. I really like how it gets all the way to the edge when you run the side of the vacuum head along the baseboard, not leaving a 1/2 inch gap like my last vacuum. So far I’m really stoked about how the rotating brush clears hair in this Animal 3-we only have one shorthair cat, but I have long hair and so does my daughter, and between the two of us shedding, I’ve done my fair share of cutting the tons of hair that was wrapped around the vacuum beater bar with a utility knife and yanking it out with previous vacuums! So far I have vacuumed my entire house a few times with this Dyson and not a single hair wrapped around the bar in the vacuum head. To my extreme surprise, I LOVE the little stair tool!! Vacuuming carpeted stairs has been the bane of my existence for years (that’s only a slight exaggeration) and this little tool that looks like it should be meant for hard floors does a killer job picking up all the dirt and bits, while fluffing the carpet nicely, including the carpeted edge and the little vertical part under each step where it fits in just right (the wand even swivels at the end of the hose so you can change your angle with ease while vacuuming your steps). Finally, I’m not lifting a heavy upright vacuum in a ridiculous way and hurting my back to make the stairs look nice!! So far I’m very pleased with this vacuum especially considering my hesitation about buying another Dyson after not really liking my old one. If things change, I will definitely update this review. Not many cons to this vacuum…but… CONS: it’s kinda heavy, but not much different than my last vacuum (a Hoover windtunnel) or my previous Dyson. The weight is not a huge issue for me. The plastic parts that seem very breakable are disappointing in such a pricy vacuum. The hooks to wrap the cord look like they could snap, and worse, the thin plastic mechanism that extends down the tank and opens the lower flap to empty it seems very delicate and if that breaks, it could be a real PITA. For several hundred dollars I would hope things would be more durable, but I was aware of this complaint going in—and this is why I give it just below 5 stars. When I have the hose wand out and am putting it back in, it’s a little sticky at the very last part of sliding it back into place at the top of the vacuum. Sometimes it really does NOT want to slide into place, and I have to use a little force. A couple of times it went right in easily. I’m unsure if this is just an issue with my unit or an issue with other Animal 3’s. I don’t like how there’s not a release to tilt the vacuum, and that you must just *crack* the sucker down to tilt it and start vacuuming. However this on Animal 3, that is easier to do and not nearly as harsh of a crack as the Dyson I had before. All in all, I was extremely skeptical buying this vacuum and I’m quite thrilled at how much I like using it and how well it works. Especially vacuuming my stairs, it is really a game changer!

This is one of the best vacuums I’ve used — powerful in the right way.
This is, without question, one of the best vacuums I’ve used and that clear canister, incredibly satisfying to watch fill. The suction is incredibly strong—in a way that actually makes a difference. The first time I used it, it pulled up dirt, dog hair and debris from carpets that looked clean. If you have pets or just a lot of hair in the house, this handles it easily. It picks everything up without getting tangled, and it leaves carpets looking noticeably refreshed. What I really like: The suction is powerful but consistent It handles both carpets and hard floors well The attachments are actually useful (not just extras you never touch), think of cleaning between the cushions. It does have some weight to it, so it’s not the lightest option—but that’s also part of why it performs so well. This feels like a household tool that you can rely on time and time again. If you want something that actually cleans—not just picks things up on the surface—this is a really solid choice.

Loving my newest Dyson!
I have a lot of allergies, but I love keeping the doors and windows open when it's nice outside, and I have animals, so I've learned a high quality vacuum cleaner is necessary in my house. I've tried several different, popular brands over the years, and have found Dysons vacuum cleaners are the only ones that sufficiently clean my house with my lifestyle. So when my last Dyson died after about 10 years of use, this is the one I bought to replace it. I saw some reviews that talked about its weight, and it being difficult to use. I currently have a 25 lb weight limit due to a back injury, and I don't have any trouble moving this vacuum cleaner. I have noticed though, that if I don't have the dial on the front by the beater bar set to the proper height for my thick carpeting, the suction is too strong to vacuum. That dial at the front is one of the things I love about this Dyson because it makes it easy to adjust the height, and suction, for vinyl flooring, rugs at the entryways, and the thick carpeting I have in several rooms. I also love that the beater bar on this Dyson has 2 different types of bristles. Over the years with Dysons I've learned the normal round bristles are great for lifting carpet pile, and the thin band of bristles remove fine dust and allergens best. Previous to this purchase, I've always had 2 Dysons with 2 different beater bars to keep the house allergen-free. I don't find I need a 2nd upright since I bought this one. I'm glad Dyson changed the tension on the hose in these later models. That makes it so much easier to vacuum ceiling corners, window sills, and floor molding without straining against the hose. Plus, the lighter weight of this model helps with those tasks, too. One of the things I like about Dysons is they're super easy to maintain - dump the bin after each use, periodically take it apart to rinse the filters, turbines and bin. Open the beater bar housing and wipe with a damp cloth periodically. Let everything dry completely before re-assembly and use. This light and easy maintenance really keeps these performing at an optimal level for years.

DO NOT BUY THIS $400 PIECE OF GARBAGE
I took a gamble buying this. I’ve been a Shark girl for YEARS but was looking for something with immense suction for the pet hair, dander, and dirt they bring in. Reading the reviews of people being unable to use this due to how powerful the suction was, I decided to give Dyson a try- MISTAKE. I was so excited to use it when it arrived, but even putting it together was irritating. The 2 main pieces would NOT stay connected. The suction/vacuum brush part fell off repeatedly, despite proper attachment. The materials also felt incredibly cheap and flimsy, but I still decided to give them a chance to prove themselves since I spent $400 on this thing. The functionality is NOT user friendly in any way. When switching between carpet, rugs, and hardwood, the toggle being at the very bottom of the machine on the opposite side of where you’re standing is annoying. You have to stop what you’re doing and bend completely down to push the toggle, that also did not move easily. The extendable hose is also incredibly difficult to get detached in order to use, rendering it practically useless. Then there’s the issue of the height/weight of the machine. It is so short that my back hurt every time I tried to use it because it was 1. Very short and 2. Required full ab engagement to move it forward and backwards while it’s on due to the strong suction. 3. Much heavier you’d expect for the size It is a very loud machine as well. Much louder than any vacuum I’ve ever owned/used and I’ve used A LOT. All of these complaints only for the machine to completely break less than 3 weeks after buying it 🤬🤬🤬 Do not waste your money on this garbage product. I will not purchase from Dyson again.

A decent replacement for my old Dyson DC15
My Dyson DC15, one of those old yellow ball vacuums, lasted nearly 20 years, and when a piece finally broke on it, I discovered that it was no longer made and replacement parts weren't available. So, I had to look at newer vacuums. I decided to stick with Dyson, as it was dependable and did a great job! The Dyson Animal 3 Upright was a reasonable replacement. Coming from the rock-solid (but heavy!) DC15, the Animal 3 is noticeable smaller, lighter, and less sturdy, but also does a noticeably better job of vacuuming. Size-wise, the Animal 3 is about 90% the size of the DC15 - a little shorter, a little narrower, but still a good size for uprights, and it's far, far easier to carry as it has shed quite a bit of weight compared to the DC15. However, the lack of weight has led to some lack of rigidity; the Animal 3 feels considerably less sturdy, especially the upright handle, which feels very bendy. Most of my old DC15 attachments aren't compatible with the Animal 3, so I opted for the version that came with a few attachments and I'm happy with that choice. Putting the vacuum together felt like a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, even with the directions, but now I'm very used to this vacuum and would recommend it. Other thoughts: - The old DC15 had a weird 'step and pull' move you had to do to unlock it for vacuuming, and the Animal 3 has done away with that - you can just pull the Animal 3 down into position and go. A welcome change. - The suction on this vacuum is powerful! On every setting but the weakest, it threatens to pull my Flor carpet squares off the floor! My old DC15 never did that. That said, on some of my throw rugs, this carpet will annoyingly pull it along with it if you're not vigilant! - I don't have any indoor pets anymore, so I don't have to deal with pet hair, but I do have a daughter, and her long hair is no match for this vacuum. The vacuum beater head (or whatever it's called now) is much, much better at picking up and moving hair into the receptacle than the old DC15, which I regularly had to clean myself. The Animal 3 has been going for a few months and I see no hair or twine or other detritus in it. If this vacuum is in your budget, I would recommend. I give it 4/5 stars only because the price is relatively high.

I really like this vacuum cleaner, picks up super good, my only thing is when to snap it back in upward position it falls back easily when you trying to store it.

Long but honest review
After meticulous research and deliberation, I finally decided to invest in the Dyson Animal 3 Upright Vacuum. I'll be honest, the mixed reviews had me hesitant, but after weighing the options, I took the plunge, and boy, am I glad I did. Let's address the elephant in the room: thick carpets. Numerous reviews warned against its efficacy on plush carpets, but I'm thrilled to report that I've encountered zero issues with my shaggy, thick rugs. The Dyson Animal 3 glides effortlessly, thanks to its versatile carpet settings. Simply adjust the settings and let it do its magic. One of my past gripes with Dyson vacuums was their ball mechanism, which tended to veer off-course. However, the Animal 3's swivel mechanism strikes the perfect balance between flexibility and stability. It maintains a straight trajectory while still offering easy maneuverability around obstacles. Now, onto the pros. The suction power is unparalleled, effortlessly tackling dirt, pet hair, and debris with ease. The rotating brush does an impeccable job of clearing hair, sparing me the hassle of manually detangling it—a game-changer for pet owners like myself. And let's not forget the stair tool, a seemingly small accessory that has revolutionized my staircase cleaning routine. No more awkward lifting or strained backs—this little tool does wonders. However, it's not without its flaws. The vacuum's weight may be a concern for some, although it's comparable to other models in its class. Additionally, I share the sentiment of other reviewers regarding the durability of certain plastic components. Given the vacuum's hefty price tag, I expected sturdier materials. Plus, there's a minor issue with the hose wand occasionally sticking during retraction, but it's a minor inconvenience. In conclusion, despite my initial skepticism, the Dyson Animal 3 has exceeded my expectations. Its powerful suction, efficient cleaning capabilities, and thoughtful design make it a worthy investment for any household. While it's not without its quirks, the positives far outweigh the negatives. If you're on the fence like I was, take the plunge—you won't regret it.

Powerful, but ....
This vacuum sucks up as lot more dirt than other vacuum cleaners, so it's powerful, but for the money, I expected much better quality. For one thing, it's heavy, which is curious considering that most of it is made of plastic. For another, it will not lock in stand-up mode, so you have to lean it against something or else it will fall over. Overall, I'm disappointed.

Easy to use... very strong suction.
Just bought this and tried it today. Wow. I have a carpet that is always full of dog hair and pine needles, and this little guy tucked it all up with ease. Im regretting all the two-hundred dollars I bought and had to clean out the hair from the rollers. I saw a review about it being heard to push and honestly, it's not that difficult. I'm thinking maybe user-error and they never assembled it correctly. It might be a little heavy and hard to push for an eighty year old woman, but I'm 50 and had no problem. I love how the hose retracts, and it all compiles together. Very cool.

New Fav toy!
This is hands down the best vacuum I have ever purchased—worth every cent! It picks up dog hair, dirt, and debris incredibly well, even from areas I thought were already clean. Assembly was easy, it's surprisingly simple to carry, and I love that every attachment has a designated storage spot. Cleaning has honestly become enjoyable. This vacuum is my new favorite toy, and I find myself wanting to vacuum every day!

Solid product
It does what it is supposed to: vacuum. The Pluses: The suction is robust and works for both carpet and non-carpeted floors. It has two filters you can hand wash, allowing it to last longer rather than replacing them once they are beyond their usage. If your vacuuming is frequent, I suggest you get an extra pair for both so that when you wash them, you have the extra one to use and do not have to wait for your current ones to dry up for at least 24 hours. A bagless vacuum, which this one is, will save you money in the long run, which is peace of mind to me. Emptying the dustbin is convenient and easy. Its reasonably long cord will cover most of your vacuuming before you need to plug and unplug it. It works well if you have pets. The Minuses: It's heavy, in my opinion, especially if you also have stairs to vacuum on. The hose meant to plug in the extra brushes is sturdy but perhaps too sturdy for my liking. By that, I mean it's not freely flexible, so to speak. The cord does not automatically retract, as you'll find with another popular find with other vacuums. In conclusion, it's generally a good, reliable vacuum that does the job it's supposed to do. It's an upright vacuum that is easy to put away and doesn't take up much space.
