It was when I took a summer job in one of those country-house gift shops - the ones with wicker baskets hanging from the ceiling and hand-made candles, quilts, birdhouses and jewelry, thick Turkish wool rugs on the creaky old hardwood floors, wrought iron furniture and knick-knacks and bags of potpourri everywhere. One of my jobs there was to fill spray bottles with fragrance oil and spray everything every morning - including the bags of potpourri! The mixture was one tiny bottle of fragrance oil to 16oz. of 70% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle. After shaking it well I'd spray everything in sight including curtains on the windows and rugs on the floor, etc. (every foot step would release the fragrance, I was told) There was a reason for the alcohol, I understood, water stains certain fabrics and alcohol evaporates too fast so it doesn't stain. I've used this trick for the last 40 years in my houses. I don't spray every day though, just when I think the aroma is fading - maybe weekly or less often. My favorites are apple in late summer and fall, then cinnamon through January, and "fresh linen" in the spring and summer. The cinnamon just didn't stand out enough by itself but the pairing of the two does. I would totally recommend it.
