Nice trolling motor for a kayak
Old Review: I bought this trolling motor for my Field & Stream Shadowcaster 123 kayak, and I really liked it, but just felt it was a little too heavy for installing to the side of the kayak, so I returned it and ended up going with a more installed, transom mount solution instead. I do wish I had bought this motor for my canoe instead of the Watersnake brand that I bought, because this motor doesn't need the shaft cut. Although it may seem a little trivial, I like that this motor comes in grey even though it's saltwater rated (which is typically white). New Review: Okay, so my original kayak trolling motor prematurely died on me, so rather than wasting time and money returning it for warranty service, I decided to buy this Newport Vessels NV Series motor again. As you can see from the pics, I heavily modified it for my kayak mount (there goes that warranty). It's incredibly quiet and very fast. For the first test run I was fishing for ~5 hours, covering about 4 miles with the last 2 of the miles being at full speed returning to the launch. I have two small 35AH batteries in parallel and had 70% charge left when I got home and put the batteries on a charger, so this motor is really light on the juice. Although my initial impression was that it was a little too heavy for a kayak (and I still stand by that opinion for side mounting), it's actually fine on the stern. I have the batteries stowed in bow compartment (which is why I chose two small ones rather than one big one), so it balances out the weight nicely. I did add the Bullnose Rudder to it, and it provides an overall big improvement in tracking and turning. It's also nice to just use it as a rudder to provide a little steering when just drifting. Great motor -- works very well and looks good. I'm probably going to buy the same motor for my canoe and pick up the 36-lb version for other smaller kayak.

Great motor
2 trips and we love it. Hopefully it holds up for the long haul. It’s super quiet and has a lot of power for going up river.

Durable, Powerful and Light Weight
I attached this motor to a DIY motor mount board attached to two pvc pipes with U-bolts, and set in my fishing rod holders, on a tandem kayak in order to take a friend of mine 4.8 miles upstream against a 4.8 mph river flow on a narrow, winding river. Don't do this. It was a very bad idea. But as for the motor, we made good progress upstream without even using the highest forward speeds of the motor. We flipped twice, submerging the motor for a minute or so each time, and sending the battery box with sealed battery to the river bottom each time. DESPITE THIS, the battery held out to get us 4.6 miles of the way upriver. The motor still works great. With the triple blade prop, the motor ran very quietly, and I look forward to using it for fishing on my SOLO kayak, by myself. Definitely a well-made product!! Best trolling motor value for the cost that I have ever owned.

Great motor, fast tech. support
The motor is great. It looks good, feels good, and runs well. At power level five, my 14 foot tandem with an overweight captain and a 40 pound battery, moved along through a choppy bay at maybe four mph. Lower speeds would be great for trolling or going gently down the stream, but were a bit slow for my taste. Yet, even below fifth speed, it moved my kayak steadily and quietly, despite the elements. (See photo). Running at flank speed, I ran out of power in about an hour or less. Maneuvering up to the bow seat to paddle, I capsized. Fortunately, the motor is light enough that it caused no trouble in righting the boat. Also, the clamp was strong enough that it held the motor onto my 2x4 side mount through, embarrassingly enough, this and two subsequent capsizes. Clamps are details, and Newport Vessels paid attention to this one. If the motor runs after these salt water dunks, I'll update this review. So much for the motor. I sent an email to their tech. support on the motor's power led's. A reply came back so quickly that I assumed it was a boiler plate auto-answer. In fact, it was a direct, understandable, and documented answer to my question. So I'm very pleased with my purchase and will buy another Newport Vessel motor if mine has drowned.

very powerful motor, very fast.
It is a very powerful motor the only problem is with the button to tip the motor up or down its not as robust as it should be but its awesome in my kayak and with a lithium battery last all day. The 24 inch length is a really smart thing to do because its perfect for a kayak.

Stopped Paying Big Money
Got tired of paying big money for glam trolling motors where the battery alone cost more than most kayaks. Went back to the basics and got more speed and battery life for about 1/4 of the price. This Newport works great. Glad I went back.

Excellent Kayak accessory
Extremely happy with this item. While it may not seem like much, I can actually attain full speed of 4.5mph in my kayak. I'm a heavy guy and yet this motor still moves the kayak well. Definitely a good purchase.

Great trolling motor with superior customer service by Newport Vessels!
I bought the Newport Vessels 55 lb. trolling motor on 12/2/2019 for my Lifetime Sport Fisher angler kayak. It’s mounted to the kayak using the Lifetime kayak trolling motor mount made specifically for this kayak sold separately. Powered by a 114-amp hour Everstart Maxx deep cycle marine battery, this Newport Vessels trolling motor provides plenty of power, doesn’t consume a lot of watts, and can troll for hours on the slower speed settings (1-3). At speeds 4-5, your battery range goes down considerably, but that’s true of any trolling motor. It’s quite heavy, so it doesn’t feel flimsy. I usually take it out on the bay, and it handles quite well. I also installed a Bullnose rudder to help improve tracking since the Sport Fisher tracks like a battleship. However, I’d trade stability over speed any day of the week. There’s a battery level display on the trolling motor handle itself, but I wouldn’t put too much faith in it. I also have a battery meter on my Minn Kota Power Center battery box. Starting with a fully charged battery, I’ve never run out of juice! After taking it out a total of four times, I noticed that the motor no longer went in reverse! I had to go to Newport Vessels’s website to seek product support. I immediately received an email response asking me to file a warranty claim. Newport Vessel’s customer service and warranty department are second to none. After sending them proof of purchase, pictures of the motor, and a description of the problem, Newport Vessels completely took care of me. This type of confidence in their products and outstanding customer service is rare in today’s market. My faith in Newport Vessels has been restored, and they’ve earned a lifetime customer.

Quiet, Clean, Perfect for the Job!
I could have settled for that other big name brand which has the initials M-K, but overall, I think this is a better choice. It’s very quiet, and allows my 14’ Sportspal with gear to cruise all day at a maximum speed of about 7.5kh/h. After a couple of hours of use, I don’t see any drop on the battery gauge. Should be good for a couple of days on the water. The Kayak series has a shorter shaft, meaning you are more comfortable using the motor as the control arm is not so high up. I like this motor a lot.

Great unit
My son and his friends used this motor (55lb, 24" shaft) on a 16' jon boat. Pushed it across the lake at 4+ mph. For the price and ease of use you cannot go wrong. I used it with an 850CCA automotive battery, barely used any battery in 2 days. It would keep up with a 2hp gas motor. Note: it comes with spade type battery connectors. I switched them to 3/8" eye connectors so they could be connected to the battery. Pick up a battery box and good to go.
