Does this help protect from spills and dust and does the cover tough to deal with travel etc?

Yes I've been really pleased with the case. Spills on top yes it would but obviously these could still go down the sides son to your Mac. As for protection and dust, I've had no issues with travelling with this case and its protected my Mac really well

Do you think the case may overheat the laptop? I’m going to be doing a lot of editing and don’t want it to effect performance

There's a massive vent at the back. I can't say that I have thrashed my MacBook to the point of overheating, but I have had 3 Adobe apps running at the same time with this case on and had no heat issues at all. If you're looking for a personal recommendation for this particular Spigen case, I had one on my 2020 13" and 2021 16" and wouldn't use anything else.
