It WILL burn to MPG (Mac OSX native by the way) - I needed this and change it in settings from the default MP4. It has no issues with USB - Reused USB drives are finicky so yes to always freshly format before starting your video project (even if new) and use no larger than 32GB, same for SD cards. All this is in the manual. I found that 25min of video conversion at HQ level equals around 1GB MPG files size. So 32GB media is plenty of space for a typical 120min tape. Now here's a tip and reality check - this unit does not contain a Crey supercomputer so it needs time to process and burn. I personally found that small 25 min chunks of video burn reasonably well and I give the unit time to process and burn. Follow the screen prompts and al shoddy be well. Be realistic with these types of devices - they are not pro level and there is a tradeoff on performance, etc. I found it is way to use but I needed to review the manual to find out most of what I mentioned here.
