Can this support a laptop upside down? I would prefer not to mount a monitor..

I tried this and I hope I understood it correctly meaning that the tray holding the latop would actually be facing the floor? Not sure what you mean with not having to mount a monitor though so I'm not sure. I tried it with my Surface book 2 (13.5", 1642 g 3.62 lbs and 18-32 mm high). It works alright and seems to hold it good enough. Although I don't think I would feel safe having it hanging there just hold up by the two plastic holders. It would feel a lot safer to put an extra strap to hold it in place. And for laptops that are larger than mine the two plastic holders may not hold it as well as it did with mine, so then an extra strap would surely be needed.

how tall are the nubs on the bottom that keep the laptop from sliding off? And can they be folded down at all?

They are about a inch tall and yes they can be folded.. I don’t use mine for a lap top, I use mine for Pioneer CD turntable and have them folded down and they work well.

Can I adjust the height of the side clips? I would like them to be lower.

Yes they can slide them up and down independently. When at the bottom the distance to the bottom knobs are around 8 cm from the bottom of the side clip and 10 from its top.
