Yes it will support a person weighing 300 Pounds. Very good product.

Is this helpful for use in a wheel chair?

Yes. Make sure you measure the width of the wheelchair and compare to width of the cushion to see if you need the X-large or a smaller one.

Can you please tell me what the inner cover is used for?

How much gel does this cushion have?

People are getting memory foam mixed up with the gel layer. The gel layer is only around 1/8" thich. The memory foam varies from almost 4" to around 2" depending on where you measure. Best cushion of this type I've found. I just bought another one.
